    the article seems pretty partisan and populist. selectively chooses facts for discredit while omitting any admission of credibility. does not address the problems or issues with a proposed solution. lots of suspicion, unfair assumptions about motives, and irrelevantly keeps tieing back to the trump administration. the highly partisan angle seems to discredit arstechnica as an intelligent unpreferential information source for productive discussion.

    i think climate would be one of the the biggest & obvious un-modifiable factor.
    if solo camping, then somewhere warm but not prone to extreme deadly heat spikes.
    assuming the west is undeveloped and rugged, then probably that. (based on the premise that the eastern half is overcrowded AND thats a bad thing(?))
    i would try to hit exurbs but be nearby civilization. else.. just be inside a city or near a friendly town.
    its extremely complicated to forsee from an armchair. would require testing,optionality, and careful decisionmaking(and research&valid+complete_data), plus low-stake trial&error(also risk assesment, risk mitigation, safety procedures).

    intended for an unrelated(independant) topic: i would estimate that americans average daily allocation for being in public is 1.25 hours.
    which is why i think alot of public space in cities are messed up, "IF you actually LIVE in them (not just drive past, from point A to point B . or spend all your time in the house/working/sleeping)
    from my experience, that one hour is probably in a privatized space. and there also possible distraction/competition from smartphones or music.

    the point im trying to argue: the streets are scary.. i get it. but if ppl only spend less than 1 hour a day in public, then essentially the streets become neglected anarchy space. its not suprising that the problem becomes a spiral. nobodys living, watching, or experiencing it.

    It was the latest major crackdown on Big Tech by Brussels, which has led the world in reining in some of the world’s largest companies from Silicon Valley to Beijing.

    Google had recently lost its appeal of a $4.5 billion antitrust fine imposed by the EU for throttling competition and reducing consumer choice through the dominance of its mobile Android operating system.

    The European Commission, the bloc's executive branch and highest antitrust enforcer, said it was acting in the interest of consumers after running an antitrust investigation of Google.

    “The best products should succeed because they’re better, not because they’re owned by the company running the search engine. And European consumers have a right to be told by app developers where to sign up to the best offers, even when the app store owner does not get a cut,” said Teresa Ribera, the commission's Executive Vice President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition.

    Google’s President of Global Affairs Kent Walker blasted the fine as “product degradation driven by a small group of self-serving complainants” that will have a negative impact on European businesses and consumers.

    The city’s housing crisis has hit “DefCon 1” — with average rents for a one-bedroom in Manhattan hitting an all-time high of nearly $5,500 last month, and Brooklyn following suit, according to new data and critics.

    “We need bold action. This is a crisis,’’ New York City Comptroller Mark Levine posted on X over the weekend, along with a link to the latest figures from the inhabit blog by real-estate giant Corcoran Group.

    The dismal June stats reveal that renters paid an average of $5,408 for a one-bedroom in Manhattan, with studio prices not far behind at $4,014.

    In Brooklyn, the average one-bedroom cost renters $4,297 a month.

    As for the overall median rent for an apartment in Manhattan, it hit $5,295 last month, while those in Brooklyn shelled out a median $4,350 a month, or a roughly 8% increase for both boroughs year-over-year, according to the data focused on the two areas of the city. Explore More

    All of the figures were record highs, continuing a troubling trend.

    “We need to push harder on every front to address our housing shortage.”

    The crisis continues despite the recent approval of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s long-promised and controversial rent freeze on the city’s nearly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments by the Rent Guidelines Board.

    Of those now rent-frozen apartments, a staggering 57,000 sat empty in 2025 — a 5.6% vacancy rate, according to data obtained by The City Reporter.

    Levine suggested some of his own solutions.

    “Update zoning, invest more City $ in affordable units, lower the time & cost City bureaucracy imposes on construction, get 1000s of vacant regulated units back on the market,” Levine wrote.

    But most of the rent-stabilized apartments that lie vacant are currently warehoused because their owners can’t afford the needed renovations, considering the frozen rents, according to critics.

    Bauta’s firm, Zion Equities, owns about 800 New York City rent-stabilized units and manages thousands more.

    “Rent-stabilized properties incur the same, or greater, expenses as their fair-market counterparts: insurance, wages, supplies, elevator service, utilities, etc.” Bauta said, “There is no support or control mechanism to cap expenses while incomes have been capped.”
