Okay so the handful of steel producers can ship cheaper, where is all this steel going that it needs a 50% gov't subsidy on shipping?

Like is this auto and aerospace industry support? Is this just making it cheaper to ship to China? Is it making it easier to buy Canadian instead of Chinese steel?

If I need a train car full of steel, shipping is going to happen by train anyways no? It'd cost a fortune by truck and most of Canada is land locked.

Just saying I don't understand the economic goals here.

It's often cheaper to ship something on a boat and have it travel 15,000km around the continent than it is to send it 3,000km on a train.

Maybe fix the rail industry instead of just putting money in their pocket.

Isn't this also to do with how massive a ship is, so shipping is cheap per container?

Have you seen a cargo ship though, the train car comtainers on it look tiny, and are stacked above deck like a tower and below decks. Sometimes as much as 10000 to 20000 containers, All going one place.

Trains are 100 containers long maybe, I think it is only 50 in Europe. And have to switch routes to get across the network, and makes delayed stops in trainyards for connection changes .

They just don't have the same bandwidth as a giant ship.
