Tenants from the Myron Manor Collective and their supporters showed up in force to a July 16 city council hearing regarding a rezoning application that threatens to turn their homes into an Airbnb-style “tech hotel”. Over 300 tenants and supporters signed up to speak at the hearing. “We know that this [city] council is not on our side and we know that even the ones who claim to be on our side…

There are three large wildfires in the interior that may be contributing, but I'm not too sure why it's suddenly so bad for the week. Usually you'd see that the wind is blowing all the smoke south and west towards us, but I don't see anything like that on the map. Probably just the good ol' heat dome. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interactive Wildfire Map

Windy doesn't have a graph but most other services with an air quality index either don't have a forecast or don't use the World Health Organizations guidelines, apparently relying on national guidelines (Canada doesn't seem to weigh pm2.5 as heavily in their forecasts). Check out Breezy Weather and compare with government forecasts to see what I'm talking about.

Try to reduce outdoor activities, and wear a K/N95 or P100 mask if you have to go outside and look into purchasing an active air filter for you home if you are able. So far, Tuesday night will be the worst, getting up to 156 by 11pm. Will update this post with the forecast. o7

*Will be better by Thursday night, ~8pm

At 9:19 PM PDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

This thunderstorm is moving to the northwest at 40 km/h and is nearing the White Rock area and will likely track through Surrey.

Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility.

When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

P.S. - Government forecasts appear to not weigh pm2.5 the same for some reason, or perhaps another reason, but in any case there is a discrepancy between the governments forecast and other models *(I think this forecast weighs pm2.5 according to the World Health Organizations guidelines).

To look through the forecast, drag the slider on the bottom bar forward/backward. Alternatively you can download Breezy Weather on your android device for a detailed graph.

A collective of 40 working-class tenants in Vancouver has formed to resist the rezoning process that threatens to evict them and their families. Two giant corporations, aided by politicians, are pushing to tear down their building so they can redevelop it into a worker-less “tech hotel.” In the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver, with the support of Vancouver Tenants Union (VTU)…

Thinking about to cleaning the carpet this summer but unsure renting a carpet cleaning machine is the way to go or I should just get a machine. Anyone has tried renting one and would you recommend the store your rented it from?

Thanks and happy Canada Day.

Every four years, the FIFA World Cup has millions of soccer fans in working-class neighborhoods around the world glued to their screens. But as with every international sporting event, the festivities mask a darker reality: groups in B.C. are criticizing the $729 million in public funds spent on an event they say benefits only wealthy tourists and FIFA sponsors, while also accusing authorities of…

Hello,

Me and my partner are looking at getting involved with social or community development work, but neither of us have much experience in those area.

I've worked mostly in Information Technology, with a personal interest in Ecological and Environmental Restoration. My partner has mostly worked Office Administration and Customer Service Work with an interest in Housing and Harm Reduction.

Are there any groups or organizations you're familiar with which are either hiring or could use some extra help while we build our experience within the field?

Any suggestions or direction you might think of is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

I think my favourite part of the festival is the weeks leading up where I just throw on a bunch of random music by artists of whom I've never heard and see which end up tickling my fancy. So far, SHEBAD and The Rumble feat. Big Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr (only found an album as the Rumble)

The previous big winners for me were the Sons of Kemet and Too Many Zooz.

Anyway, would love to hear about any folks whom you'd recommend!
