What is your philosophy of upgrading to the 13 pro? (frame.work)

I got my 13 a few months ago and it kind of sucks if I waited I could have gotten the 13 pro instead. However I won't throw it all away or sell it to buy the pro even though I could. I'm planning on upgrading one part a year (or whenever they break), starting with the keyboard cover, to get to the pro. What are your plans?

Maybe when they stop funneling money to fascists under the guise of big tent

    Is there a alternative that does have negative reputation that has similar views on right to repair and interchangeability and upgradability if components? I'm needing on that I can upgrade and repair on my own because I'm a poor American with little to no options.

    I'd meant to respond to this but, apparently, forgot.

    There is but there are some caveats which may make it unsuitable, for you. MNT Research sells a few different pieces of hardware which are entirely open hardware with the aim to be entirely repairable and modifiable, even more so than Framework (from what I hear). They publish the full spec.s of every component the machines are built with and you can even buy printed copies of the manual which lays out the spec.s of all those components.

    One of the caveats is that they use ARM; on the one hand, that means no need for fans as there really isn't any kind of heat build-up but, of course, not everything is available to be built for ARM (you might know this already and I apologize if anything I mention isn't needed).

    The other caveat is that the laptops are a tad chunky (mostly to make rooting around in the innards to swap parts and fix things easier); some people don't mind that but I figure I ought to make note.

    The new one they're working on, but haven't released yet (they ship the earliest in July, though, so coming up), are somewhat more slim, though: https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next. But it's really a matter of relativity.

    I'd heard that they were kind of slow but that the newest CPU they got for the upcoming device reaches levels comparable with other laptops? I'm very much out of my depth in that area, though.

    Lastly, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume, based off your instance, that you're family and, so, mention that the CEO is genderqueer (Mastodon account at https://mastodon.social/@mntmn). So you do get the added benefit of supporting a Queer-owned business which I don't think even Framework offers.

    I don't own anything by them so you may want to read up on some reviews or lurk forums, first, but it definitely is as committed to right-to-repair and interchangeability/upgradability of components and also deeply committed to open-source.

    They've funded DHH, a British Danish white supremacist, creator of ruby on rails and omarchy. They gave material support (hardware) to him and their argument was basically that it didn't go directly to him but to an organization he was a part of - they obscured this on the sponsorships page and idt omarchy's sponsorship was ever even added

    Now it turns out they give money to a conference he made because he got banned from the original ruby on rails community for causing problems there

    They couldn't even come out and say that they dont hold those views, threw a hissy fit on social media and then slightly adjusted their sponsorships page

    What they should have said:

    1. We dont hold those kinds of views
    2. Anyone who is intolerant of others is not welcome
    3. We will not support this person or their projects financially due to their controversial views
    4. We will be more careful about selecting sponsorships in the future

    They didnt do any of those 4 (maybe the 4th?)

    This is bullshit internet gossip.

    Dude named Nirav Patel explained that his approach to making electronics is informed by his growing up in an immigrant family, which "had to be thrifty" (in one of their videos on their YT cca 2024). How likely is it that such a dude is a white supremacist? Or was he supposed to be a Hindutva supremacist?

    If he was a supremacist, how likely would he be advancing that agenda by retweeting a rice by DHH — a minor figure on the sidelines — sending him a laptop, and sponsoring a local DHH-affiliated Ruby event with relatively modest $20K?

    Much more probably, they randomly threw some money around free software and only later figured out who DHH is.

    He also clearly distanced himself personally from such views:

    To avoid disappointing anyone later who wants to ascribe beliefs to me, I am pro-immigrant and pro-LGBTQ.

    ...if this was not obvious from the start.

    He funded the projects of a person who holds those beliefs multiple times and has not denounced DHH's beliefs when questioned. Saying you are pro immigrant and pro lgbt is not a counter to working with and funding someone who wants those people gone.

    It doesnt matter if he isn't personally a white supremacist if he chooses to KNOWINGLY work with and FUND them over the concerns of others in the community. Big tent is stupid. If a nazi walks into a bar, announces theres a nazi, and you do not kick them out, that is a nazi bar. If they found out later that he was a white supremacist, the first thing they should have done was stop funding, apologize for funding him and not knowing about his views, say that they do not agree with those views and they are not welcome, and that they would be more careful in the future.

    We only got bits and pieces of that after the community complained. Giving a nazi money, then when it is found out saying "well, we have a bit tent ideology," then later after getting flak for it saying "well actually I'm pro- the things the nazi hates" is not very inspiring. A company that actually cares would admit the fault and fix it, not try to brush it under the rug.

    We say some sorts of interaction with DHH is akin to approval of his ideology, this minimizes our ability to differentiate between degrees of material harm.

    It also means that we should say that anyone that buys a framework thus also supports DHH's ideology. Starting to be a lot of people who we probably normally wouldn't call "Nazi."

    It would incidentally also mean use of Linux in 2014 means approval of verbal abuse, see: Linux mailing list.

    But this is the crux, right? That they refused the struggle sess, not that they've done anything particularly bad. Because materially:

    funded the [...] multiple times

    False. Once, and even that is is tenuous. The laptop was one of many not to support the recipients, but to ensure compatibility. During the 3 weeks that the Internet thought Omarchy was cool.

    chooses to KNOWINGLY work with and FUND them

    False. Funding had already happened by the time the issue was flagged, and there are no indications that any more money is going DHH's way.

    And moreover Anarcat, who originally raised the issue, soon agreed that Framework are in the clear:

    it matters, so much, that Framework did that research. for me this is the key difference between uncertainty about the politics of Framework (where the whole thing would have been dog whistlings) and due dilligence (where this is all a basically massive misunderstanding

    But that is not the remedy requested. Instead, they are invited to performative self-humiliation:

    concerns of others

    apologize for funding him

    admit the fault

    ...which they never did. And this makes some people angry. Because this is a power struggle where a small online clique is trying to assert its authority to gatekeep the in-group.

    So why don't you do all of us a favor, and redirect that struggle session shit to any of the AI companies, or the suppliers pivoting to cater to them, or the surveillance-tech, or Alex fucking Karp in particular — all of whom are materially making our world worse and are much closer to actual fascism — and away from an OK-ish little electronics manufacturer that is doing quite all right for the narrow purpose that they have?

    Framework seem happy to invest in the Omarchy and Hyprland projects. Omarchy is run by someone who pushes fascist agendas such as white nationalism, transphobia and eugenics. Hyprland is run by a developer who has been banned from freedesktop.org for failing to moderate the Hyprland community Discord and prevent abuse from there.

    Edit: I corrected misinformation stating the maintainer of Hyprland pushes fascist talking points. I don't have evidence of that.
