Clever observation, you're right Fascist could feed on such a sinking market.

Knowing the history of the USA I would have bet on a launch of a crazy war to distract and reaffirm its power. But fascism might be more likely

    I disagree on the basic idea that a stock market loss doesnt destroy capital.

    For me the definition of a capitalist society, is that the revenue of capital out perform the revenue of work. Based on that, if a stock market stop providing crazy return. Then the revenue of capital is reduced. Hence you move toward a less capitalistic society.

    But as you said there are always other capital owner (Warren Buffet at the moment) to keep the system afloat, and it will just be a reorganization of wealth between wealthy.

    I read 2 stories. and yes it is bad.. but I read worse from wellknown author (F.Herbert's son, kof kof) .. To be fair SF has a lot of bad writer. And it is kind of fascinating how sometimes it is blatand it is AI, sometimes I will bet a human rewrote some stuff.
