This is it. China also has billionaires, but they aren't more powerful than the state.
And they know that.
They use at least a part of their wealth to support their society, cause there's a realistic danger that they'll lose it all if they get too cocky.

Without a friend, you'd try every combination of clicks until you got it.
You had the time, and no choice, cause they only released one game per year.

    40€
It was a poker tournament with friends, 10€ buy-in.
I got drunk and bought in another 3 times, then lost it again from making dumb drunk bets.

I never gamble with serious money cause I know how it would end. I'm susceptible to addictions.

Shit! I just found out I'd been at this exact point before, and I didn't even remember it when I posted about my "first" Friday yesterday.

This post was also from me, 1 year ago on a different account:
    https://lemmy.world/post/28390234

And also this one where I wondered how to navigate an upcoming work outing at a beer festival:
    https://lemmy.world/post/28433594
I went to that festival, and I drank. Just "one last exception", cause I didn't want to make my sobriety official in front of my colleagues yet.

And that was that. Another year down the drain.

    My first Friday (feddit.org)

    I quit drinking last Sunday.

This time, not "for a month", or "only on special occasions", or "not at home", or "not during the week".
I tried all those before, many times.
Last week it hit me like a hammer: I'm an alcoholic, and have been for over 20 years. The realization what I had lost to alcohol in all those years made me weep.

And it had reached a point where I could already see the bottomless pit that would swallow my life, looming ahead, closer than expected.
I still have half my life ahead of me, so the only choice was to stop walking towards that cliff.
And that meant: I won't drink anymore. Ever.

What surprised me was how easy the decision was. And the strength of my resolve.

    But now it's Friday. I'm off work. It's 5pm.
And for about half an hour, all my resolve was just gone. "Hey you made it through the week, let's celebrate and relax."

I managed to not buy the usual sixpack and bottle of wine on the way home, which feels like a great achievement. But that half hour where suddenly something in me just casually swiped away the decision I had made scared the hell out of me.

I'm strong, but apparently at any point I can just stop being me for a moment, so does that strength really protect me?

Ilvesheim.

I DON'T mean other games that let you build a car from scratch.

I'm looking for other complex open world games that throw you into the deep end without any explanation, and are completely unforgiving when you make mistakes.
Games that even actively hate the player, but give you a deep sense of satisfaction when you finally figure it out.

So no tutorial, no quest markers, no mini-map, no quick-saving, etc.
Bonus points if they also show you a glimpse into a niche culture, like My Summer Car does with rural life in Finland during the 90's economic depression.

Other examples I can think of are Kingdom Come Deliverance in hardcore mode and Dwarf Fortress. Which ones do you know?

One by one, the delegates were introduced to each other, but one particular individual caused a lot of confusion - Lesotho's Minister for Oceans and Fisheries.

The South African delegation went into a huddle and there was a lot of discussion, an occasional pause and finger pointing, back to more discussion, before finally one of the South African ministers asked bluntly: "How is it that Lesotho has a Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, when it's surrounded by South Africa and has no access to the ocean?"

Lesotho's Minister for Oceans and Fisheries replied:
"How come, South Africa has a Minister for Law and Order?"
