I think Parasyte The Maxim was more effective at conveying that kind of terror and existential dread. The Summer Hikaru Died made me empathize too much with the eldritch horror.
This anime has layers
The first two seasons of Hell Girl are excellent.
It's an episodic series about people contracting a supernatural force to get revenge. Lots and lots of tragedy ensues.

I was gonna say that. Memory's fuzzy, but I do remember using TinEye before Google added the reverse image search feature.
FMA2003 as well. I love that we got two very different worlds from that manga.
Brotherhood had a better ending, but the original did more interesting things with the homunculi.
