So, Canvas starts in a week. For those not aware, it's a collaborative/competitive Fediverse game, where you place pixels in a canvas, to draw stuff. I joined in '25 and '24 with random stuff, but this time I'm planning an anime-related drawing:

It's the "fanta sea" scene from The End of Evangelion with Boota (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann), Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro), and Goku (Dragon Ball; he should have a tail by then, but it didn't look good in the template) instead of Rei, Shinji and Asuka. The idea is to represent those classic series "everybody" knows about.

It'll go in the top left because apparently nobody is taking that spot as of yet.

I'm wondering if anyone here wants to help me; or if they want help from other users, because they're also drawing their stuff.

My RSS reader, Thunderbird, is suddenly throwing errors on all my ani.social feeds (communities, inbox). Trying to verify the URLs through the feed subscriptions window I get a "The Feed URL is not authorized." message.

Looking at the error log, it's complaining about not well formed XML and clicking on the link results in an attempt to complete a Cloudflare "Verify you are human" challenge.

I'm not getting these issues on any other instances. RSS getting blocked like this is the reason I left Reddit for Lemmy in the first place.

Someone recently posted asking if we had a Matrix room. I used to be opposed to hosting one because moderation can be a bit difficult. The recent Discord issues have shown more interest in Matrix lately so I guess it's worth experimenting on.

You can join the room #general:ani.social using any existing Matrix account if you already have one. But if you would like to make a new account on the server, you can DM me for a registration code. The room is public so anyone can join.

The server uses Matrix Dendrite which means that there may be some Matrix features that are not available yet.

I was curious if there's a matrix chat room for ani.social for meta discussion and for interacting with the broader community? Even if the scope of this room was reduced, it would in theory be nice to have a place to have some meta discussions and support chat.

I'm trying to reduce my discord usage so having an anime community would be a great help.

Lemmy.zip (my instance of choice atm) has this on their end, for example.

I'm a casual anime fan, my main references being Ghibli, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bepop etc, in general, I like good art and good scenario. So I want to follow discussions about this type of anime.

However, I am very uncomfortable at the countless anime that sexualize minors (and minor looking supposedly adults) or over sexualized women.

Is there a community for this interest? I am too much of a casual to animate such community myself.

I typed in "ani.social" in my phone browser, expecting to see the normal Lemmy UI. Instead I'm confronted with the Alexandrite front end. I don't think I clicked anything to give me this front end; I think it's a total surprise to me, it's possible I'm an idiot who missed something and accidentally clicked a setting. Asking for help here after clicking around in more settings trying to figure out how to turn it off.

I've just experienced something that disturbed me greatly, and I see what I need to do in piefed to prevent this from occurring again. However to mitigate that concern, I plan on making a community to log/journal musings folks want to share on their own. Think of it like actual social media or tumblr where folks write stuff they want to share abroad, but don't necessarily have to answer to others.

I praxis polymath and linguistics, and sometimes I muse about things comrades aid me reel me in to the zeitgeists. And often I need help relearning what is “normal.” So I thought I can do the same here, with a “/c/blog” for ani.social, until piefed is truly ready for the ghost features I need to implement.

I'm one of those folks far far far removed from my locality’s zeitgeist, and desire to disassociate from them profusely. So I need help, a lot of times.

With Anime Owl going the way of the dodo, and having lived through the fall of Aniwave and Anix, is there a possibility for our little corner of Lemmy to have its own community for talk and sharing "totally legit" streaming sites? I know .ml has one but I'd prefer to stay in our yard so to speak.

AFAIK Lemmy itself supports GIF profile pictures, as I have used one in the past on another instance. But trying to set one here gives me a "Type Error" pop-up and fails. Are they disabled here?

I have been jamming to a djent musician for the past couple of months, and they have gone from about 10k subs to 40k on YouTube.

I think it would be nice to have content creators posting here, but I'm concerned about people complaining about YouTube and other platforms. Also, after the way Alex from Technology Connections was treated, I'd hate to see us get shitty reputation.

So, again, I ask before inviting them. What do you feel about inviting content creators? Is is invading your space? Do you welcome people just trying to make it? Would you rather keep them separate?

It's June 21 which means Ani.Social turns another year older! Thanks to everyone who has stuck around and to all the newcomers this month! Unfortunately, I never really tracked our stats but the last birthday post mentioned that we were just a bit under 1000 users and now we're at 1600 with 180+ active users per month! But this is a federated platform, so we have users from all over the Fediverse participating in our communities!

I partially started Ani.Social as a kind of personal research project. Learning about the Fediverse as a practical approach toward a democratic social media is really interesting. For the past four years of my life, I have also been generally obsessed with thinking about and consuming Japanese media more analytically and theoretically. So combining that and the Fediverse, Ani.Social was born!

It's been really interesting to learn about how different people consume this so-called "Japanese media" and what kinds of discourse are produced, especially from people who willingly spend time on alternative spaces like the Fediverse.

With that said...

PieFed announcement!

For the past month, I have been testing PieFed, another Reddit-like Fediverse platform. I think it has a lot of potential and its been receiving a lot of development efforts from the Lemmy community lately. Compared to Lemmy, it's both ahead and behind depending on which areas you look. What I particularly like about PieFed is how experimental it is, and that's sort of what I need to further my research.

Right now, PieFed has flairs, spoilers, polls, topics, feeds (like multireddits), better mod and reporting tools.

You can test the future Piefed instance at https://pt.nyaa.social/. The tentative instance domain is Nyaa.Social and will likely share themes with Ani.Social but hopefully it'll be broader than just "anime and its related industries".

I would like to know what other people think, and what kind of ideas we can explore in Nyaa.Social. I don't think it should simply be "an alternative to Lemmy" or "an alternative to Ani.Social." It's a great opportunity to do things differently, and see what works and what doesn't.

There's no official launch date for the new PieFed instance but the earliest you can expect it is July 7. In the meantime, I would like to gather as much feedback on what kind of platform this new instance could be.

I should mention that Ani.Social is not going anywhere! It will continue to run and it will still be my top priority to make it a stable and easy experience for everybody even after the PieFed instance launches.

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances.
