Straight-up. I really don't care who these people voted for. If they're pissed that datacenters are stealing their family home, that's actually a perfect opportunity to win right-wing votes that doesn't compromise values. At the minimum, It's an opportunity to fight back against big tech and data centers. Punishing them for who they presumably voted for is deranged on multiple levels, but unfortunately normalized among liberals.

Liberals will insist on adopting centrist and right wing policies in the hope of winning over jetski dads in the suburbs. They'll do anything they can to win over these voters. They do it every election. It leads to a cynicism among voters that nothing can ever change for the better (and they're fucking right). So people stay home or vote for someone else. The jetski dads predictably vote for the most fascist politician possible, because that's what they want. They don't want fascism lite, they want fascism done right. The centrist eats shit and blames the left (who often work tirelessly to elect their dumbass as a harm reduction measure, but whatever).

Then, when the Republican wins and starts doing Republican shit, liberals offer only condascending quips about a process that never works out for people. They insist that suffering is payment to them from the poorest and least educated people in the USA for not playing their little game correctly. And in the same fucking breath, they'll propose more dead-end centrist garbage to the same jetski dads as last time.

Stop conceding to the right. Run on populist left policies that improve the material lives of everyone, and you'll naturally win over voters. That includes saving rural Georgian families from data centers even if they don't like you or vote for you. If you do enough for them you will eventually win them over. Fighting data centers is a net win for environmentalism and labor.

It's a little buggy at times, and was somewhat oainful to set up, but it's been working for a couple years now.

It syncs to all of our devices. What's cool is I've created a recipe template that syncs to the shopping list. So when I uncheck any ingredient in a recipe, it adds it to my shopping list.

The datacenters largely aren't built yet, as someone else pointed out. That doesn't even matter though, to your point.

The Epstein class has successfully destroyed large portions of the Internet through bot traffic. They've scraped virtually all human contributions and stolen it, while ruining traditional vehicles for information gathering. They've eviscerated consumer hardware, and thus shifted control of compute away from the masses. They've successfully manufactured consent for mass surveillance including harvesting our biometric data.

Once the AI bubble bursts, it will be one of the largest transfers of wealth in history as they force us to bail out this fradulent industry. If it doesn't throw us into another great depression, the damage it will do will ensure that things never go back to how they were pre-AI. Once that reality becomes apparent to the masses, they'll be primed and ready for Peter Theil's vision of "Freedom Cities"

I think the entire idea of free and open source software is an example of people working for something without personal benefit. We wouldn't be talking on Lemmy right now if people hadn't created the ActivityPub protocol and developed the infrastructure, for instance. Hell, I've developed software purely out of spite.

I think if you remove the carrot from the equation, most people will still do the things they love and would still need the things that they need. If I didn't have to work 40-60 hours a week to afford things like healthcare and housing, I'd likely be working on software that improves the lives of those around me.

I think that a lot of the issue behind AI is profit motive. If that was removed from the equation, AI could be a really useful tool for development. But the fact that the main usecase at every company is "go faster so line goes up" gets in the way of that.

The other issue is efficiency. Burning down a rainforest to make a stupid banking app isn't very appealing to me. But if we could work to make generative AI more efficient at what it does, and transition to consumer ownership of compute/hardware, it might be more feasible. That's a long ways off, and I don't think the powers that be want that future.

I use AI every day at work. We built an entire orchestration framework on top of Claude Code. It features skills that can pull in a jira ticket with well defined acceptance criteria and complete it without very much human intervention at all. We've built out entire epics and our QA team has not seen an uptick in defects. This is because we all still do manual code reviews in addition to AI reviews. We even have a skill that checks AC against the PR diff to make sure we're meeting AC before it gets to QA. AI does make our team more efficient.

But at what cost? None of us are learning anything about coding. I feel more burnt out than I ever have. It's an environment nightmare. It is a moral/ethical nightmare. Finally, none of us are seeing any additional compensation for improving efficiency. That compensation is going to Anthropic.

There is a world where AI can be a net benefit to the world, but it isn't our current one.

This is already a shocking number, but is the death count even accurate at this point? I thought the Palestinians weren't even able to keep count accurately because Israel destroyed the institution that kept track of that. So are these counts based off of what the UN estimate?

For sure. Most of my money goes to local artists. If I want to support a music artist, I will usually see them in concert and/or purchase merch. But Ticketmaster is making that difficult these days. I had to have this discussion with my mom regarding amazon kindle.

I will usually buy vinyl or cds for artists that I listen to a lot. It has the additional benefit of giving you a hard copy of the data. But yeah, this is unfortunately the way.

This is an overt invasion of everyone's privacy to protect children. It will do nothing to stop children from accessing this content. On the contrary, it will likely push them to even more unsavory areas of the internet to get around it.

20 years ago, the goal was to "protect us from terrorists," and now the argument is "protect children from the world we created." A year or two from now, they'll realize that they didn't go far enough with this, because children will use TOR and/or VPNs to get around it. Then they will come for those technologies. It is a transparent power grab by rightwing fanatics. It always has been and always will be.
