Climate breakdown is occurring more rapidly with the heating rate almost doubling, according to research that excludes the effect of natural factors behind the latest scorching temperatures.

It found global heating accelerated from a steady rate of less than 0.2C per decade between 1970 and 2015 to about 0.35C per decade over the past 10 years. The rate is higher than scientists have seen since they started systematically taking the Earth’s temperature in 1880.

All these graphs plot the warming rate in °C per year, but when quoting numbers I have followed the custom these days to talk about the rate in °C per decade. According to this analysis, the current estimated rate is 0.31 ± 0.07 °C/decade.

Which estimate is best? I don’t know, but I do know that even 0.24 °C per decade will take us past 2 °C right around the year 2050. The whole point of the Paris agreement is: DON’T GO THERE. My advice: fasten your seat belt, things are going to get ugly.

Keeping Europe safe from extreme weather “is not rocket science”, a top researcher has said, as the EU’s climate advisory board urges countries to prepare for a catastrophic 3C of global heating.

Maarten van Aalst, a member of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC), said the continent was already “paying a price” for its lack of preparation but that adapting to a hotter future was in part “common sense and low-hanging fruit”.

Not really adaptation as 3c means it keeps getting warmer from the tipping pints being crossed, over about 1.5-2 c means civilization collapses, it's only a matter of when after that.

All this really does is kick the can down the road to civilizations destruction, the only adaption is how to restructure society to get to near zero emissions, our natural sinks can take up about 2t CO2 per person. Higher emissions then that is failure. We can start by banning flying, starting with private jets

PFAS are "forever chemicals" that threaten both the natural environment and human health.

Norway is home to fantastic natural places that provide us with outdoor recreation and learning. Everyone says they want to protect the environment, but do they actually do anything? The reality is brutal: the environment is being degraded, species are disappearing, and populations are declining sharply. This does not just happen by itself—it is the result of human choices.

“I’ve seen a fair bit of death and destruction, but Rowley Shoals was always the place that was still standing,” says Dr James Gilmour, a research scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science.

The only really big cuts so far have happened in the land sector — by felling fewer trees, and planting more. (In the jargon of carbon reporting, that's called Land Use, or more formally Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF)).

All other emissions combined are now nearly identical to what they were in 2005.
