I have a small group (4 of us) that’s been playing since 2020 - very casual, just chatting and playing whatever. Usually co-op. Here’s a list of some standouts that we enjoyed a lot or go back to regularly:
Every game popular with streamers, if you really just want a game that is more fun in the background kinda way. Simple and not really demanding of your attention.
Helldivers 2 is a good one that is also a fun game you can hunker down in and get sweaty with if you want more than that. It has varying difficulty levels so it's what you want to make of it.
Seconding the 'friendslop' recommendations, all of those games are relatively cheap and fun to mess around with friends. REPO was a big hit in my group even if it doesn't have that much content.
Deep Rock Galactic is pretty ridiculous, and a wide array of mission types & difficulties to choose from as a party of =/<4. The upgrade system's fun, too, and loadout synergy is essential but uncomplicated.
I've done that with Jazztronauts, a game mode for Garry's Mod. [I wrote about it on !games@lemmy.world.](https://sh.itjust.works/post/35534975) You explore real maps on the Garry's Mod workshop for stuff to steal, but that's really just an excuse to go sightseeing in custom maps and hang out.
Division 2 is relatively cheap for the amount of content and mostly thoughtless until endgame. You just do stuff at your level, get new guns and gear, level up, do new stuff at new level, rinse and repeat.
Your build only matters once you can no longer level up, which depends on your DLC access.
I've been playing it with a friend while we talk about news and current events.
the cryptic mmos are easy and many folk on them are more about hanging out with their favorite genere. champions is superheroes, sto is star trek/sci fi (costuming and ship variety have some folk rp as other sci fi franchises), and neverwinter is d&d/fantasy. tab targetting and they have some scripting integration. the most famous example is sto players referencing emergency power to space bar (scripting all your things to fire with sequential pushing of rhe spacebar and relying on very low cooldowns in your build)
