People who are uninformed: When purchasing a watermelon, you want to pat it like a drum. (Don't slap it like you're Will smith and it's Chris Rock. That might not end well; the melon might explode) When you pat it, you want it to sound hollow. This will help you pick better tasting watermelons. You're welcome.

    Everyone's always like "You want a watermelon that's got a very light..."

    No... There should be a slight resonance in your fingers, like you're patting a very overfilled water balloon. If you're not sure, lay your fingers flat and drum them on it. Hasn't failed me ever.

    I used to tap them until I learned that watermelons that were ripe when picked are yellow on their underside. Ones that were picked prematurely are green all over.
