Trying to bring this community back... Just finished an engine swap on my Cherokee. Did the rebuild myself -- did a 4.6L stroker with an aluminum head. About 120 miles into the break in process.

This hackaday blog Electric Jeep With Modified Prius Hardware shows an example of an electrified jeep from this youtube post Boost Charging with the Gen 2 Prius Inverter.

I'd really like to look at examples like this, and now I know the prius inverter is a thing, but I'm also looking for more kind of off road conversion kits, and targeting old but pretty good but sturdy off road champs like different jeep models. And that are not as expensive as buying anew?

The issue with modern vehicles, whether electric or not, is how connected they are, and how they have become like software as a service kind of stuff, so one really doesn't own the vehicle since one needs to keep paying per month, quarter or year, whatever it is, and with all the dangers on privacy and security of generating location and other personal information that can be gathered from the vehicles. There are people that have found ways to hack modern cars to incorporate kill switches and the like, but that's risky if in need to apply for guarantee or similar. Besides, Ford, Bollinger, and Rivian, which are all pretty expensive, there's no much off road options, and maybe converting is the best way moving forward.

@a_gee_dizzle@lemmy.ca, I've heard your call. Here is my 1996 Mitsubishi Delica, I bought it for just $4000 (best purchase of my life) a few years ago. It's not exactly sexy, but it does have a 3.0 V6, a locking transfer case with a low gear, a rear LSD, ~3cm lift kit, AT tires and a "can-do" attitude. It can seat 8 (9 if you're adventurous), and the two rear seat rows fold flat into a bed.

My gf and I spent like half of last year living in it, including 3 months continuously, and the rest of the time it was hauling my friends to mountain hike trailheads. We used it to travel all over Georgia, with a lot of offroad stuff - it hung out pretty well with a stock FJ80 once! Unfortunately, we had to move from Georgia and so we have to sell it now. Oh how much I will miss it! Hope the new owners have their fun in it too

This is the time we accidentally spilled an entire 10 L bottle of water into the mattress and had to dry it out. Thankfully the 1000m climb up to the lake made the engine quite hot!

This was a new years trip, we slept in the car on a nearby lake when it was -20℃ out. It was really fucking cold but thanks to good sleeping bags and blankets we made it through OK

Rear LSD and open front. When I’m crossed up do I use 4hi or 4lo when trying to brake and gas at the same time? Or doesn’t matter?

Light offroading in dry conditions and the Cybertruck completely failed.

I figured I'd post just a short trip report for a Sand Hollow trip in Utah that we did last weekend.

The forecast we super hot for both days (over 100 degrees) so we decided to go in the morning.

We ran Milts Mile on Saturday. That was a really fun trail, but it claimed my passenger-side hub knob. I was able to scoot up middle monkey (which was hella steep but surprisingly not too scary).

The off-camber stuff scared me the most. In the photo above, this section of rock had me in my head so much that I stopped and my spotter and to jump out and assure me the passenger tire was still on the ground.

I don't have sway bars at all (with plans to fix that) so I get tons of body roll.

On Sunday, we ran Ridgeline and the first part of West Rim trail. My wife drove that day and had zero problems with the initial shelves and rocky climb on Ridgeline.

She was able to take the "fun" lines at the Funnel and Steps as well.

What blew me away is she managed to drive up Toll Booth #1. I didn't want to try and drive it because I was worried about the amount of body roll my XJ has, but she wanted to give it a shot, and boy did she ever.

Finally, we hit Top of the World - snagged the photo, and left via the Water Tank "road".

We've got another weekend trip planned in November and we can't wait to go back!

Florence OR back in the day with the PNW FJ group...many good times, glad to see there is a community started here, I don't offroad anymore (don't even have a driver's license anymore 😀) but I love to see the adventures!

In Colorado last week. 02 Land Cruiser

I've got an ARB awning tent that packs relatively compact and light that I use for camping when wheeling. Works super well for me and my dogs (or whoever's with me).

And to think this was taken 30 days I to a drought

Western utah after driving through a storm two weeks ago.

A couple years ago, my buddy and I had just finished enough of his SAS project on the hundie that we needed a test drive. This trail is relatively close and has some great views. We managed to rope our other friend (who owns the orange FJC) into it as well.

Nothing failed and all the welds stayed welded, so that was nice.

Working on getting the hang of the fediverse lol. Redcone was amazing, killer views!

I misjudged how deep the rut was and ended up stuck between the banks. It drove out okay but I totally thought it was going over while I was doing it. The rear right tire dropped down like 6 more inches and the front left lifted off the ground about a foot to foot and a half from this point. Also found out the seat belts lock when you're tilted this much so I couldn't put it back on when I got back in.
