If the movie is interesting, I have little problem focusing. But sometimes no matter how interesting it is, I have squirrel moments anyway. If I'm at home, simple, just rewind. Being in a theater helps a lot - the environment helps the brain focus on the screen. If I have a problem paying attention to a movie in a theater, it's probably just not very good.

After reading your description I had to look them up, and wow they fuckin rock! I started listening to a set they did on KEXP recently, just to try to get an idea of their sound. But I actually ended up listening to the whole thing. To answer your question, no I don't think they're trolling. They're just a couple of lovely weirdos with mad skills.

I've never actually had a group to play with, but I have some advice just from the standpoint of group dynamics. It sounds like they have good intentions and poor execution; they want you to have a good time playing the game, so they try to point out pitfalls to avoid. (Edit to say maybe their intentions are selfish but I have better results generally when I assume good intentions). Unfortunately, they're forgetting/not realizing that making mistakes to learn how a game works is actually more fun than just being given a complete guide. Maybe tie it back to the DM's themes (mystery/exploration/the unknown) to make it stick better. Speaking of which, there's nothing wrong with wanting something different; I would just be prepared to tell them what exactly that is. From their end, it can suck to be told your ideas aren't fun without an alternative, but they need to understand everyone has different tastes.

If you want to stick around, I would try to approach things from that angle. I wouldn't mention your feeling of holding the group together, it's not likely to garner positive feelings (I think). Let them bring that up if they want, then address it.

It's good not to underestimate how effective propaganda can be on those enmeshed in different algorithmic circles. Instead of 'evil' I would say 'blind'. But it's a fair point.

"What if things could be different?" Or some variation thereof. Sounds like whoever you're talking to is, unfortunately, neck-deep in the propaganda. They might not even have the concept of a different system that could actually work. A lot of people are conditioned to believe anarchy=chaos, I would try to talk about successful mutual aid projects in your city. "What if 'x' program could impact even more people? Why not?" I think my goal at first would be to change their association with some core concepts, so they don't instinctively recoil.

Sorry I don't have more than that, this is a tough one that I've never really figured out myself. Interested to see what others say.

Edit: you might also be starting off too big/dramatic? Like yeah I agree capitalism is fundamentally evil, but for someone who's never even played with the concept before, it can feel too huge to even approach, hence "i have to work". Maybe try attacking smaller pieces/more specific aspects of capitalism. "Damn, it's fucked up that blackrock just gets to buy as many houses as they can when people are struggling to pay rent."

The worst type of person is someone who "already knows" everything. I've become accustomed to simply waiting for them to fail instead of offering advice that is at first refused. A boring, small way to live.
