Yes, the Matrix space is hosted on a particular server, but it all connects so a user from one server is able to participate in a space hosted on another server.

that's so true - I'm just old and it reminds me of IRC, which reminds me most of AIM - I feel like Discord is too associated with voice chats and video games and that would be misleading, I think

but fair enough, I do feel like most of the discord servers I am should really just be converted to Matrix spaces
