Being dead or MIA is a very specific and powerful state of being where most laws completely change. Being alive but not known (to you) where they live is completely different. The system will show them as alive and paying taxes but accessing and sharing address and contact information without permission is various levels of illegal and will get flagged

Best bet is private investigators. They still exist and are good at OSint and tracking people down by the faintest trails

My interpretation is that "the" and "a" is doing a lot of work there. Maybe a translation quirk? It reads like, if it's misspelt 4 times in THE death note (the one you're holding), but later on it clarifies that it doesn't make you immune from ANY death note. So it's not so much complete immortality as limited exclusion to prevent abuse, which makes sense if you imagine some Eldritch death God being spammed with junk assassination requests. Your specific death note got a filter applied because you were being dumb

I've never seen a car like this. Mine was made in 2021 though so I must have caught the last ship car out lol. What kind of things do cars even use the internet for? I'm struggling to imagine it

This also happens to me, but I've noticed it's only a very specific combination of factors that triggers it.

    • It has to be a high stakes engagement. Something that matters deeply to me.
    • It has to be addressed now, no delaying or waiting until I calm down. Either because it's time critical or the other person refuses to let me disengage and follows me.
    • Talking is the only option. There's no other solution to this confrontation than words. I'm not good at words so this stresses me out.
    • The other person has all the power in this confrontation. If I do nothing, they "win" by default
    • The other person doesn't agree with me, and no matter what I say, it's not working.

So really it only happens for me when I'm backed into a corner and have to talk my way out. I get upset because it's actually an unwinnable war. Actually, typing this out makes me feel a bit better about it, because it's obvious there was never going to be a good outcome in those kinds of "discussions" anyway.

This is a good write-up of the issue: https://theconversation.com/men-are-more-likely-to-commit-violent-crimes-why-is-this-so-and-how-do-we-change-it-157331

It kind of mirrors what others are saying in this thread. Some key quotes from the article.

men are more likely than women to associate with antisocial peers.

life stresses can produce anger and frustration [...] men are likely to react violently to such strains

men are more likely than women to engage in risk-taking behaviour

there has always been an entrenched belief in the “natural” order of things, which associates masculinity with dominance and status, [...] bravado among peers, the drive for power and control, shamelessness, and a lack of concern for others

I read somewhere that the average time before diagnosis of POTS is 5 years, and people need to see 7 different medical professionals. I'm sure CFS and Fibro and other chronic illness are similar, or even worse.

Every person I've met with chronic illness has been mistrustful of the medical system, and for good reason. They've been told their symptoms are "psychosomatic", depression, anxiety, laziness, deconditioning, etc… Gaslighting and poor treatment seems to be the norm. I wouldn't be surprised if most people in our situation have medical trauma; being defined as: "psychological or emotional symptoms associated with negative medical experiences."

I know that, personally, I hate going to doctors, especially new ones.

    • I expect it to go poorly.
    • I don't feel like they will believe me about my symptoms, or they will ignore what I say.
    • I don't trust that they even know anything about my conditions or their treatments.
    • Often the treatments given to me are actively harmful.
    • If I disagree with them on anything, it turns into an argument.

The worst part is, I'm usually correct. I'm not sure you can even classify it as trauma, because that implies it's not continuing to happen. If anything, it's a wise adaptation to be wary.

You might argue that everyday family doctors aren't equipped to treat us. Often I'm treated like a hot potato, tossed between specialists because I'm nobody's problem. There is a huge gap in the medical field for knowledge about chronic health conditions. The analogy that stuck with me was: "they can set a broken bone, but they can't help my arthritis."

    What do you guys think?

    I made a post to https://lemmy.world/c/unpopularopinion

    https://aussie.zone/post/34735670

One comment was very rude, so I reported it. Another comment admitted that they were going against the rules of the community and downvoting a post they disagreed with, so I reported it. Two total reports I've ever made in that community that I can remember. Suddenly I'm banned by @JonsJava@lemmy.world, who says I'm reporting "everybody" and starts shit talking me publicly in the comments.

I know I'm not supposed to include private communications to "prove my point", but at least it's interesting to read.

    Tap for inadmissible evidence

    They stopped replying after that.

I now know it's a guideline, not a rule, but Jesus, what an unfriendly community over there. Just a DM explaining it's not a rule makes sense. Or at least lift the ban after the explanation, and apologise for being so snarky.

Specifically applies to places like Lemmy and Reddit. But also other social media like Facebook with thumbs up and down reactions. I'm mostly talking about Lemmy here though.

There's no benefit to having this system on Lemmy. It results in people who disagree with your content leaving a drive-by dookie on your doorstep. If you disagree with someone, you should actually have to leave a comment as to why, instead of just downvoting. If downvotes are removed, things would still be sorted by popularity correctly. The only thing we would lose is the "controversial" sort function, and could just be replaced with a "most comments" or "least upvotes".

People are going to say, just ignore them they don't mean anything. But they do mean something. If you see -13 on a thoughtful post you worked hard on, it makes you feel bad. That's just the human condition.

Yes I know I can turn votes off in settings here, but many people only respond with an upvote to show they read and acknowledge your message, so you're missing out on a whole stream of communication if you disable it.

Anyway, it doesn't keep me up at night, but I think it's lame when people just downvote and leave. It turns comments into this weird popularity contest where you feel unwelcome, especially on a discussion-heavy place like here.

Edit: here's an interesting discussion a while ago that had some ideas: https://lemm.ee/post/30635232

    Highly specific question, I know.

When people compliment me, I genuinely don't know what to do. It feels like they've given me a physical object, and I'm just standing there holding it awkwardly, but I don't know what to do with it.

Complements and praise does nothing for me emotionally, so I just say "thank you"; in the same way you thank a kid that handed you a rock they found on the ground.

Like, I appreciate the sentiment — as in, I know they're trying to be nice or something, so it doesn't bother me. It's just one of many small things that makes social stuff a bit harder. For example, I probably don't give out any complements to other people, because it doesn't occur to me as an important thing to do. I'm sure this has many effects in my life I'm not aware of.

This is just a vent post / unpopular opinion (? unsure if unpopular). Specifically on Steam. Linux native builds are so buggy and glitchy and never work right. Always some combination of:

    • No sound
    • Old outdated version missing content and incompatible online
    • Controllers don't work
    • Crashes, doesn't launch at all
    • Horrific FPS
    • Cutscenes don't play
    • Weird game breaking softlocks and logic errors, like critical items not spawning and dialogue not triggering
    • Zero support and low priority from the developer

I have none of these issues with Proton. Proton works perfectly fine, I love it. This only happens when a game doesn't use Proton. As soon as I change to Proton all issues are resolved. This problem has followed me across distros with fresh installs, so it's not a config issue. Yes I have the correct drivers and such, NVIDIA proprietary unfortunately. It's so strange, you'd imagine the native build would run better not worse.

The worst part is, it's not easy to tell when a game will launch using Linux native as it's the default priority. Games can even silently update and stop working when they gain Linux native "support". You have to manually go in to properties and override compatibility to proton. Normally I do this when I notice a suspiciously large amount of bugs and I'm like hmm... oh look it's Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 again.

I wish there was a way to just force Proton globally. Either that or people actually test and maintain their Linux builds. I'd rather there be no Linux build at all if they're going to be so terrible.

Edit to add commented example list of games:I couldn't get a full list because I was relying on having set a flag forcing a specific version of Proton to identify which games were problematic to jog my memory... Unfortunately this data is local only and was not synced between computers, so it was lost when I changed distro. Just from my limited memory though, I can list some that I distinctly remembered when writing up my post, though it's many more in reality. It's also surprisingly hard to see whether a game even has a Linux native version, you usually have to wait for the store page to load and scroll down to compatibility, which is just annoying.

    Games that worked well:

    • Factorio
    • Stardew Valley
    • Baba Is You
    • All Valve games (TF2, DotA2, etc)

    Games that had issues:

    • 1001 Spikes
    • The Case of the Golden Idol
    • Broforce
    • Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition
    • The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe
    • Cook, Serve, Delicious
    • Valheim
    • A Game About Feeding A Black Hole
    • Audiosurf 2
    • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
    • Slay the Princess
    • TIS-100
    • Cassette Beasts
    • Brotato
    • Bit.Trip runner
    • Don't starve together
    • Unpacking
    • While True: Learn
    • Fez
    • Magicka 2 (controllers not working)
    • One Shot (critical gameplay bug right at the end. Had to watch a let's play to finish it. I messaged the dev who left me on Read)
    • Just Shapes & Beats (no sound)
    • Tiny Bookshop (no sound)
    • HiveSwap (critical gameplay bug right at the end, and savefile bricked, had to watch a let's play and the dev ignored me) (I'm not a "fan" I swear, please don't lynch me)

I'm getting tired and I'm sure you get the point. Almost every game in my experience has been unplayable on Linux runtime. I'm glad it's working well for you though.

For some reason as soon as I get to the "end" of the game, I completely lose motivation to play. This happened with DOOM: Eternal, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Paper Mario TTYD, Cassette Beasts, Shovel Knight, Oblivion, Baldur's Gate, God of War, Mass Effect... Pretty much every game I've ever played. It's like the fun part was the journey, and I've seen everything the game has to offer, and I just don't really enjoy the ending process. Feels like a formality at that point.

Including DLC, micro transaction purchases, etc. If you got a game for free, please also list your non-infinite next best.

For me it's Team Fortress 2. $100 total spent on hats and the Orange Box back in the day, 4200 hours plus of fun, meaning 2.3¢ AUD per hour. Initially I thought DotA2 would be my best but it turns out I've spent a lot more money in that game than I thought...

My worst is God of War: Ragnarok. Bought it full price for $95 AUD, only played 2 hours and hated it, meaning $47.50 AUD per hour.
