This is my take as well. I will add that I think I'm more likely to notice an issue with the type if the type is first though since it preps me to expect a certain thing after it.

int firstName will likely trigger more alarms than firstName int but maybe thats just my perception due to familiarity. I feel like once I see the type my mind is looking to make the next part make sense whereas if I see the name first then I just assume what comes next makes sense and mentally move on.

    Maybe there's some geographical or cultural differences, but I can say for sure that hobbies is a perfectly normal place to meet women in my area of the US. I have dated plenty of people I've met through hobbies.

    Also I think there's a difference between picking up a woman at a gym vs picking them up at a running or biking meetup. I think just like with anything else, there are inappropriate ways to do it, but it's not socially unacceptable from my understanding whereas gym pickups really are.

    Local subreddits used to have lists of things like top restaurants or little known museums etc. if your area has a community on Lemmy you might be able to contact the mods and see if they'd be interested in a sidebar link for it or something.

    I know people who don't pay and do ok on the apps. I don't know if it's your area or your profile, but maybe try to get some feedback from women irl or online if you haven't already. I know a lot of millennial women got off the apps a bit back, so that might also be a factor.

    I'm terrified of becoming an internet post now if I approach someone.

    For what it's worth, I've generally only seen this sentiment from people who don't know how to behave around women. Maybe you're an exception, but most normal guys I know don't have an issue with that. They may be nervous to approach, but never out of fear of being lambasted online. If this is a real concern for you, I'd suggest reading some of these posts and just not behaving in the way they have an issue with.

    I know Hollywood is its own thing, but it's so strange to see a movie advertising Depp in it. He seems impossible to work with and after the whole trial I can't imagine it being great for audience good will. Is there really no other actor they could have gone with?

    That's a great plan until it's not. If you're able to, I'd highly recommend looking into getting Obamacare if you can't get insurance through an employer due to being a contractor. I don't know your personal situation, but Obamacare plans are often more reasonable than people imagine.

    Though I totally agree that triage is important, you can absolutely be left waiting for more than an hour with an emergency. It's just not as pressing of an emergency as other people. There's plenty that an urgent care can't do for you that requires an ER but that is not life threatening within the next few hours.

    The whole article is filled with gems like this and the exact right length for this sort of human interest piece about someone who is just trash.

    During a cost of living crisis this guy drops 100k+ on something no one asked for and complains that people are cheap.

    I get that people do own statues, but who exactly did he think was going to buy this? Anyone stupid enough to like this either in content or execution is too stupid to have the money to spend on it. Anyone rich enough to afford it could spend their money on things they actually like and don't just pretend to. Not that intelligence and wealth appear to have anything to do with each other at this point, but this guy clearly doesn't understand the way things work.

    You don't seem to have read the article because the government admits that there are issues with racial bias and it's already attempting to mitigate that for indigenous people specifically, but not black people.

    Whatever correlation may or may not be present should not be used to justify worse conditions. Worse conditions lead to worse outcomes so it becomes a bit of a self fulfilling issue. We do not know how these decisions are being made and that the problem. Even if race is excluded it could be using a proxy for race. There should be guidelines that apply to everyone or a panel that can be questioned and held accountable. AI cannot be held accountable in this way so it should not be making these decisions.

    For context, Ashley is one of the women who had a baby with Elon and who wrote an anti-trans children's book. I'm not a religious watcher, but I'll occasionally watch one of Taylor's videos. This one had me on the fence for the first 20 minutes, but the latter half made me a bit more accepting of a possible change in Ashley. I don't think the change was prompted by a desire within herself, and she clearly has a lot more work to do, but I'm open to see her change. I'm mostly seeing lip service in this interview and would have preferred a more "hard hitting" approach, but I don't think that's what Taylor really does. The comments seem pretty mixed on the interview and Ashley overall.

    Orchid Spikes Getting Too Long (reddthat.com)
     

    I'm not really into flowers, so I'm looking for some advice. I have grocery store orchids from two years ago that are always in bloom. They have 3-7 flowers each basically nonstop. Unfortunately they have far outgrown the 17" stakes I put in their very small original pots and I don't know what my best option would be. I water them with two ice cubes once a week and I'm not looking to really increase the level of investment I'm putting in. I know I'm not doing a lot, but I've not had to feed them or mist them or any of the other things I keep reading online and I'd like to not have to worry about that. My main issue is that they are getting way too tall. I read that you can cut the stems, but I'm worried that any cutting will prompt additional flowering and maybe a need for more water or food or something that I likely won't be able to recognize causing them to die. I also keep seeing people talk about pots with holes and special airable soil, but they are in little plastic cups and I can lift them straight up and the soil is basically a solid almost styrofoam-like consistency so I'm not sure I believe what I'm reading. Any advice or suggestions to preserve the low maintenance aspect while trimming and possibly repotting would be greatly appreciated.     Most comments there say to cut the spikes so it focuses on leaves and roots, but I really don't think they have enough space for more leaves or roots, and I'm worried that repotting will ruin whatever my streak is with keeping them alive on just ice cubes since that seems uncommon. I've never kept a flowering plant alive for this long, despite a thriving vegetable and herb garden, so I'm a bit attached. If I cut just the ends of the spikes will it still flower? Should I cut the whole spike and just hope it doesn't get too big for the pot? Is repotting really as care intensive as the comments suggest?

    Was looking at .world while logged out to find some communities to sub to, and noticed that aljazeera@rss.ponder.cat is not coming up while logged in. I can see bbc@rss.ponder.cat, but I can't find the aljazeera community and if I go to a profile that posts on it I see other posts, just not posts in that community. I have not blocked any users or communities. Is this possibly a reddthat thing? This does not appear to be an issue on non-reddthat accounts.

    I was a big fan of the previous fruit smoothie, and would sometimes stop at Costco just for that if I was already in the area shopping, or had a rough day and wanted a pick me up. Recently had a rough day and went to Costco on my lunch break. I noticed they didn't have the fruit smoothie anymore and instead had a new strawberry banana one. I was a bit disappointed, but I was there so I ordered it anyway. I didn't finish it and offered the rest to a coworker once I got back to work. I had one sip and it was just too sweet, in a bad way. I looked it up and apparently it has more servings of fruit, but somehow it tastes extremely artificial. If I end up at McDonalds I will sometimes order their strawberry banana smoothie, and this was similar, but somehow much worse? I'm not sure if I was just expecting better and it was so disappointing that maybe I didn't give it a chance, but I will not be ordering it again. Just letting you all know in case you get curious. I enjoy the food and the prices are great, but I don't think I'll be going there as a treat anymore. Will probably just limit it to when I happen to get hungry while shopping there. Unfortunate, because I would probably make a special trip basically just for the smoothie about once a month. I know it's not enough to single-handedly keep it on the menu, but still.

    I'm seeing games (CK3/The Sims/Cities skylines) release DLC done by popular content creators or modders, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. On the one hand I'm glad they are being recognized for their work and getting paid, on the other hand, it kinda feels like it's turning the already unstable game dev career into an gig economy? Obviously, there are reasons why these studios can't have every creative and talented person working for them all the time, but if they keep going like this, what's to stop them from making larger and larger core mechanic DLCs more like gig work? Maybe that works for these modders/creators, but I worry about the industry in the long run. I'm sure most of the deals are under NDA, so how do they know what they're getting paid is more/less than what someone else did (and yes that matters imho, just because someone undervalued their work doesn't make it ok to pay them less - hence why salary transparency is important and the law in a lot of places)? I also feel like it encourages people to do free work (legit love modders, so no hate here) for the potential chance at getting a larger gig, which is common in the dev space, but I'd like to see that go away completely. I'm conflicted, and I keep hearing people say that it "supports modders" but it feels like in the long run, a stable core team of devs with job security helps everyone more. Like sure, donate to the wildfire victims, but what if the money ends up passing through a bunch of for profit companies who are actively hurting the environment? Just kinda feels off to me. Would love some other perspectives.
