Lack of memory is one of the main bottlenecks in Windows, and 8GB is really the bare minimum at this point. I'm not familiar with the memory requirements of music software you're using, but if you're working with a lot of samples I can imagine the more the better. 16GB would be better and 32GB better still.
But yes, that is a fairly low-spec CPU and more memory will only get you so far. As mentioned in other replies you may be better off looking to replace your laptop with used hardware with better overall specs than what you currently have.
Despite how financially unattractive it may currently seem, a RAM upgrade will most likely provide a significant performance increase. You'll have to decide if the cost is worth it to you.
