I don’t think this is the case for every school and professor, depending on how hard it is to get a professor for the subject they teach.

Personal anecdote ahead:

There’s one at my school that has over half the class drop every single semester, every single class because his expectations for freshman in a core class are more in line with what you should be expecting of seniors or grad students. Who knows how many that don’t drop fail, because he responds to requests for assistance or advice by essentially telling you to figure it out yourself.

But he teaches classes that tons of international students want to take, so he makes the school too much money (they still keep the money if you don’t drop before the 2 week drop deadline, way too early for most to see how fucked his classes are).

The funny thing is I took a class of his not knowing he was like that bc it was online, happened to be in my wheelhouse and I got an A after spending a stupid amount of time and effort on my papers. I needed another class and decided to take him in person because I genuinely did learn a lot from the other class, and oh boy… noped right the fuck out of there after making a genuine effort to see if I would be able to even do the project worth 1/3rd of our grade.

The way boys play can lead to acute ostracization if the rule is discriminatory towards you or even if you just happen to get unlucky where girls will often make exceptions to those rules to avoid a peer being ostracized

Growing up this was not my experience at all with girls. Maybe if you’re neurotypical and/or cis then girls are like that, but I got ostracized by most of my female peers from early elementary school (and the majority of my male peers wouldn’t give me the time of day to begin with because I was a ‘girl’). The ways girls can be cruel to each other for arbitrary reasons is really jaw dropping if you haven’t experienced it firsthand. Maybe it’s different now than it was ~30 years ago, but I’d be surprised if it was. If anything I have to imagine cyber bullying makes it worse.

Considering how wholesome and cool your communities are, this is absolutely bonkers to me. You don’t mod any communities remotely offensive or extreme, wtf? And they obviously aren’t unmoderated either.

Look up books and guides for native plants in your area. Get as hyper-local as you can for what species to leave be, weed, or plant. Ideally in that order: it’s best to start by encouraging what’s already there by removing its nonnative competitors. This can be a fun way to bring people from the community into your garden, especially if you offer food and drinks.

If you have established bird feeders in your yard you could host bird watching social hours. An elevated platform for peanuts/corn/mealworms, a seed feeder, and a suet feeder should attract a wide variety no matter where you are. Don’t be discouraged if the birds take a while to notice them, just keep the feeders clean and free of mold or pests.

In that vein, there are lots of social things you could do in a garden! Gatherings for mending/repair, handcrafts, creative reuse art, and general wellbeing activities like nature journaling are all things you could do to bring people in and use it as a community space.

If it’s because you’re worried and not because you have proprietary software you need that’s keeping you tied to it, Mint was super duper easy for me to install (I’ve never installed Linux before) and it’s been essentially out of the box compatible with the games I play since most are already optimized for the Steam Deck.
