Crossovers are cars with a less reclined seating position (and often, butch looks to make it “truck”); people over an age like them because they’re easy to sit into. After decades of SUV focused marketing, they’re what people think they want but with the efficiency closer to a car.

But also I think it’s part of the skateboard design. The whole car is necessarily taller, because of the 10cm or so thickness of the battery deck. It’s a challenging design to make a sedan that tall look normal.

And they’ve built crossovers for years, the evoque were (iirc) basically a ford mondeo. As to why most EVs seems to be crossovers, I think it makes the construction easier as you can place the batteries in the floor of the car without customers complaining about seating position being to high for a “sportscar”. Now they can brand it as a Chelsey tractor for the masses.

A rally range rover would be pretty sweet
