We're not far off really. I'd wager more people are using things like WhatsApp or Discord for calls, and there are ads baked into those.

There are ads in those?! Why the fuck are people putting up with that?

It's like youtube. If you wanna watch a video of something, it is most likely on there. Same as discord, if you wanna chat with your mates in a game or join any kind of geek topic centric community they are very likely to have a only a discord for that.

Granted there are options to fight the power such as freetube or vesktop on linux that allow you to use the services while exposing as little as possible of yourself, but you still have to in order to participate in most places.

I haven’t watched a YouTube ad in years. Ublock origin is the way.

Me neither, i go to almost any length to avoid ads in general. The point was that i still have to use youtube and jump through all those hoops to do it in an acceptable way, because that's where the content is.

Same as discord, they are less obnoxious with ads than youtube but they are data thirsty mfers. Using a plugin supporting client allows to disable some of that and otherwise obfuscate yourself/getting at premium features, but again i would rather not use it except i have to because everyone is on there.

Network effect. And most people's tolerance for ads is crazy high.

So those people can chat with me through a Matrix bridge while I wear my hazmat suit.

Yeah but it's exactly that tolerance that I don't understand – on an emotional level.

Sure I can rationally construct reasons for why this has developed in this way and why people got used to it, but I can't get entirely get rid of this initial "how can the third ad in 20 minutes of video not make you furious?" reaction.

I disabled auto-update on Discord for Android right after the announcement that ads were coming. They haven't broken anything for the old version yet, so I'm gonna keep using it until it breaks. Unfortunately not so lucky on the desktop version.

Yeah. It's not my favorite. Still, most people can talk and listen faster than than a stenographer can type. There's also the added layer of nonverbal information in oral communication that isn't in text. Calls are still more effective for most matters that are both urgent and important. I don't like them, but I'll resort to them if I need to.

I had this terrible dream that I went to a movie theater and had to watch ads in the middle and more right before the end of the film. And they told me if I wanted to skip the ads I would have to pay 50% more for my already $20 ticket.

Remember when movies were $5 for matinee or sometimes one day in the week was $5. ? Anyone ?

    It wasn't that long ago.

I used to go to the movies like 1x or 2x a month. Now it's literally been years. I think last time was the first new dune movie.

    Sad.

... or the voice call feature will be deprecated due to the universal use of text messaging and advertisers will refuse to buy ads for a defunct technology.
