Supporters of Palestine have called to boycott the payment platform Stripe after its CEO and co-founder Patrick Collison - an Irish-American billionaire who has advocated for Palestinians in the past - posted on social media on Wednesday about his run on the beach in Tel Aviv and how it was "great" to be back.

Many responded to his post on X by pointing out that he was only thirty minutes away from the Gaza Strip. Conservative estimates say nearly 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's war on Gaza and two million have been under constant Israeli aggression as they fight what UN experts have called "'deliberate starvation".

Some drew comparisons to the Academy Award-winning film, Zone of Interest, which depicts the everyday lives of Germans who lived next to the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War Two.

Alright, then they’ll just have to stop consuming a lot of things they buy online. Also they can’t buy from places that use Stripe terminals. I’d like to see an entire group of people get up from their lounges and buy grocery in person because their local home grown market with home delivery uses stripe checkout.

    Boycots are not only for consumers. They can also be implemented by vendors. Stripe is a large company, but it has competitors.

    Yeah, and as a company owner I now I have to invest good amounts of money to switch providers? Spend development resources, administrative resources and whatnot to make a switch because the guy made a tweet you don't like? And what do I do if the next providers's CEO does something you don't like?

    Him visiting a beach in Israel isn't the same as him saying "kill all the Palestinians". This extreme knee jerk reaction is what has caused so much shit already, can we please PLEASE just stop it?

    Reply with a tweet that maybe he is a bit insensitive, and please let it be done with that. This screeching isn't solving anything, it isn't helping Palestinians, it's just making life miserable for more people.

    You want a person's life ruined, you want a company gone, hundreds of jobs gone, you want me ruined, all because a guy went to visit the wrong beach and tweeted about it, and me? I'm disagreeing with you, that's wrong think!

    I know there is a genocide going on, everyone does. Of course I'm against it, most sane people are. This tweet is insensitive, sure, but that is a discussion to be had. Unfortunately, current generations don't have conversations anymore, we go knee jerk straight into trying to ruin people's lives. This is not the first nor the last. This attempt surely will fail, but I know loads of people whose lives were ruined because of some tiny perceived slight.

    You're not the good guy here, you're the bad guy. You're the reason so many people are done with this nonsense and walk over to right wing politics because there they can usut have a nice day without worrying about every single step they take that might destroy their lives. I'm serious, Ive heard too many trump voters complain about exactly this. You make people vote trump, please for the love of God, stop it.

    The guy did something insensitive. Tell him it was rather insensitive, and continue your life. He's not the reason for the genocide, he's not supporting it, he's just a guy who went to the wrong beach FFS.

    I have a problem with people stumbling over themselves to ruin other people's lives for wrong think, or small mistakes. There is no room for learning, growing and improving, no, er have to cancel, terminate, destroy.

    And let there be no mistake, shit like this destroys lives. Has been doing ever since cancel culture became a thing. Just remembering this Nobel laureate that lost his job and got buried for making a joke that was taken the wrong way as being racist. Oh wait, he didn't actually make that joke, some black woman made it all up just to be in the spotlight. His career was destroyed, the woman got her attention and was never punished, and nobody ever apologized to him for the pitchfork bullshit. This is how it always goes and it pisses me off.

    It’s almost like as if we’re all expected to participate and if we don’t. Then we’re just as bad as them apparently. Maybe you may not think the same, but I’ve seen plenty of examples IRL and on the web where not following the trending boycott gets you outcast. And it’s also sometimes like the only thing you might hear from the mindless echo chamber.

    Yes stating you like visiting an Apartheid state while it is in the middle of a genocide is the same as saying 'kill all the Palestinians'

    How else would you interpret someone saying "good to be back in Nazi Germany" at the height of the Holocaust.

    You are not expected to participate in every boycott. If you cannot avoid using something you can keep using it. But if you do not care much about a certain brand and it is on the boycott list, consider using alternatives

    Dude just accidentally visited a beach. A mistake anyone could make. Get over it. I myself have accidentally just walked down a beach which may have been in a country actively committing genocide and I may have had to make the conscious decision to fly to said country and ignore everything about it, and my money may have been helping to fund said genocide and whitewash the actions but like it's just a minor mistake. Can easily happen. It's just an accident bro.

    The customer is always right. In the original meaning of the phrase: if enough people are sufficiently mad at your business to stop spending their money for your services, you as the business owner are in no position to argue with them or call their concerns frivolous.

    No business owner is being forced to acquiesce to the boycotters' demands. People are just choosing not to give them money if they don't like what they're seeing. If a boycott like this ends up tanking Stripe or any business that uses it, that's literally the free market at work and the result of consumers exercising their right to choose who to do business with. Tough luck, should have adapted to the market.

    The dude went to a beach and a large group of people want to crucify not only him but also all the employees in his company. All must be punished because wrong think!

    Can we PLEASE just all calm down and not make storms in coffee cups? Yeah, a conversation can be had about the insensitivity of his post, but why do we all need to pearl clutch and pitch fork whenever anyone makes the slightest misstep?

    They're currently in the process of exterminating 2.2 million people by turning Gaza into a concentration death camp.

    The only difference from the Nazis is the Nazis had a larger starting population to exterminate. Other than the gross total, the methods are similar and the goals are similar. People in Gaza are being starved and butchered on a scale eminently comparable to the Holocaust and I don't know how you can deny this.

    Yeah, Gaza is abhorrent, noone will deny that. You comparing Gaza to the Holocaust as being 1:1 is just you not having the first clue of how fucking efficient the Nazis were in comparison to what Israel is doing.

    They're starting with a smaller population in Gaza, but the most recent estimate from June had the death toll at more than 186,000 people. They're not just blowing people up, they're sniping them with drones, they're starving them to death by blocking aid, they're depriving them of medicine and water and sanitation, they're making hospitals nonfunctional, they've made 2+ million people homeless as we're heading into another winter. It's a fucking nightmare, easily comparable to the Holocaust.

    The methods are similar and the goals are similar.

    Not only does Netanyahu deserve to be hung, so do all the Nazis in his army.

This might surprise you because you've presumably have never given enough of a shit about a cause to actually modify your behavior for it, but deciding to participate in a boycott does in fact mean having to sacrifice your own convenience and limiting the options available to you.
