    At least in southeast Asia, teenagers has been doing that since the late 90s - early 2000s (I was one of them).

    AFAIK, the Japanese emoticons use a lot of Japanese characters (letters?). For example, /(=✪㉨✪=)\ or (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚
