Jokes aside, ladder fall accidents are terrifyingly dangerous and will fuck you up.

    Damn that's brutal...

I've jumped out of ladders as I've felt them starting to fall a couple of times, never more than like 2 metres high though, and it's scary.

I wouldn't climb anything higher without strapping my self up to something, it's just asking for a quick grave...

People don't give falls the respect they deserve. I worked at a place that required fall-arrest harnesses for anything over 5 ft. It was a pain for sure, and people loved to bitch and moan, but a 5 ft fall can genuinely be deadly.

a 5 ft fall can genuinely be deadly

Most adults are tall enough that their brain/head/face can get serious injuries in an uncontrolled loss of consciousness. Any additional height simply makes the fall harder to control and increases the energy that needs to be safely dispersed.

Yes, even falls from household ladders are deadly serious.

Agreed. My one friend's dad fell off a ladder and landed on concrete. He had a lot issues as a result. I believe he recovered mostly from that before being diagnosed with really early pancreatic cancer (a year after the fall and was actually caught on a CT scan bc of the fall). He passed away a few months ago.

I teach an OSHA safety course and they have a statistic that 80% of workplace injuries are caused by slipping/tripping or ladders. There's an entire chapter devoted to HOW to use all the myriad types of ladders safely.... it's actually pretty amazing that such a dangerous tool is sooooo common in everyday life. Injuries related to cuts from saws etc are kinda common but those are rarely life-threatening... falling from elevated height will wreck you!

  • on the slipping/tripping side, i am friends with someone who either is or used to be the world's foremost expert on knocking over old people (she both loves and hates when i describe her PhD that way). like 2/3 falls are because of vision problems. keep your eyes healthy and your vision prescriptions as current as you can afford!

That is 100% an old people worry. I often forget just hold old some folks on Lemmy are. You are right though.

Falling down and landing head head first is lethal at any age. Ladders don't even have to be a part of it, normal standing height can sometimes be enough. It happens more to older adults because they don't have the speed or mobility to break their own fall, but it can kill a youngster too if they're not careful.
