On Wednesday, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia struck down a D.C. law that barred therapists from other jurisdictions from doing online teletherapy visits with clients in D.C. The decision comes nearly six years after Virginia-based counselor Elizabeth Brokamp teamed up with the Institute for Justice (IJ) to file a lawsuit arguing the law violated the First Amendment.
Seems like this will make access to mental health resources significantly easier. Hopefully we extend this to the rest of the country
“Many clients prefer to do teletherapy from the comfort of their own homes, so it’s been very difficult having to tell clients I cannot help them out because of these regulations,” said Elizabeth. “This victory will make it easier for D.C. residents to get the mental health care they need in a way that fits their wants and needs.”
