[–] lovely_reader@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (3 children) I'm curious, where are you from that "American" used on its own doesn't specifically indicate united-states-of-? permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 child) American is slang for something or somebody from the US. I live near the canadian border. Canadians, Mexicans and everyone in South America all are technically "americans" and refer to themselves as such occasionally, often because its a necessary descriptor for people from particular continents in the same way "eurasian" is used to describe a multicontinental land mass. Personally, I'd encourage people to re-adopt the word "Yankees" for US people, its a way funnier word. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (1 child) Too many Confederate/Rebel/MAGA flags still flying for that. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 point 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 child) I think its funnier to upset them by calling them yankees. If you specifically want to call them something dumb it doesn't hurt to call them something new: S'ankees, Sou'r krauts, corn krauts, texmex, texish, etc. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 child) I prefer Y'all Quaeda . permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 2 child comments replies: [–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 point 1 day ago* I like that one too, it just doesn't convey the truth their leadership is like a bunch of ivyleague trust fund kids who were trained to sound folksy by voice trainers. permalink fedilink source parent [–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 1 point 2 days ago Latinamerican here. "American" for us is someone who was born in the Americas... i bet it is the same for all latinamerica. permalink fedilink source parent [–] JargonWagon@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago It's a stamce on here some people have to dub "American" as belonging to all of North and South America. It's basically just being anti-US as much of Lemmy is. permalink fedilink source parent
