It's still the most braindead take i've ever heard. Because almost all mainstream distros come with an appstore pre-installed. Ubuntu/Mint, Manjaro, pop!os, bazzite,... You just open the software center, search for 'discord', 'steam', etc. click install, and that's it. Arguably even easier and safer than on Windows because it works like a smartphone (via an App Store) rather than requiring users to search the web and download .exe installers. Triggered by dependency issues? Avoid rolling release distributions and install some stable LTS -> solved. A beginner installing arch and complaining that it doesnt "just work" is like someone previously using apple products ordering a "build your own android smartphone" assembly kit containing the raw electrical components and no os pre installed. Then shitting on android because the iPhone just works. "I'm using arch, btw." for years now and rarely have any issues. But it's not (made) for beginners. What sucks here isn't linux, it's the user. Who didn't even bother asking chatgpt what distro is for them. Or which specific distro is not for them. Then complaining, not about their os but about linux as a whole. I'm not sure how many users prefer it or know about it though. The culture around Windows is that's search&download is still the obvious way, even though many installers nowadays aren't standalone offline packages but rather downloaders of the last stable version - a little appstore delivery in itself. And as it's a part of the whole ecosystem, and a storefront, MS Store assumes you have an account that it sometimes asks even if you try to download free apps. I can't tell what exactly, maybe a specific Realtek sound app?, was the sole app that I had a hard time finding outside of it. I wonder what issue could've prevented download of an exemplar Discord tho - picture seems generated with the weird text on first panel, but whatever, it's for my own curiosity. Since they ferched the list of packages, internet is on, the problem there would be with mirrors configuration/availability, I suppose? I recently encountered that issue (thanks to my government, blocking/being blocked by IP) and learnt about the reflector tool and updating mirrors list, both not having GUI due to rare demand, but it's a nice niche for a small project. permalink fedilink source parent
