The render and artwork for the box shows just the numbers illuminating, meanwhile the actual die just shoots light out of every surface. I ordered mine with opaque surfaces so the light only shines through the numbers. The app has no payment or subscription, but allows you to customise the lights to be different depending on what you roll (like a crit or a nat 1 for example). They were also supposed to connect to roll20 but i don't think that ever rolled out. They also work without charge because the numbers remain visible, even when not illuminated.
