On @redlemace@lemmy.world's advice, I stacked the new pile in a criss-cross pattern. It certainly is more compact and more stable, but also finding adequately-sized logs to make the pile grow straight is a somewhat OCD exercise that I don't care that much for.
Also, my pile doesn't look as nice as in other people's photos 🙂 But hey, it's functional.
I dont know what niche post i stumbled, but personally i use the criss-cross only at the end of the pile, because its does not topple as easy and stack the between part straight because its easier pick the firewood when they are all pointing in to same direction and you can fit more of them that way.
Also if there are some pieces that are shorter/longer or have branches or anything unusual i stackt them all in to one end.
