On @redlemace@lemmy.world's advice, I stacked the new pile in a criss-cross pattern. It certainly is more compact and more stable, but also finding adequately-sized logs to make the pile grow straight is a somewhat OCD exercise that I don't care that much for.
Also, my pile doesn't look as nice as in other people's photos 🙂 But hey, it's functional.

My brother in law stacks like that too. I'd only do that -in that image- for the left side and the rest as your first stack. With the exterior wall, the right side has no where to go.
