What movie trailer was better than the actual movie? (lemmy.world)

Man of Steel trailer 3 is still tops for me, I posted it in this thread. When MoS was released I was so delighted, but after the initial awe wore off, in hindsight it was a disappointing Superman movie for many reasons (mostly the hope that Supes embodies). The most recent Superman movie by Gunn is the Superman movie I've wanted every since the original Superman the Movie with Reeve.

    I hear you, but weirdly enough I feel the opposite! I do get that the hope and optimism part was severely lacking in MoS, and it's more present in Gunn's new movie. But I kinda think of Superman as the wooden goodie-two-shoes of the JLU animated series, and to me Henry Cavill did that better than David Corenswet did. I feel like the Superman from Gunn's movie is kinda underpowered and a little too "normal quirky funny nerd guy" rather than the straight-edge force of nature I feel like JLU Superman is. I feel like MoS almost got that, but then injected a bunch of sadness and desaturation which brought it down a bit

    Eh, I wouldn't say that. I've heard people say that Corenswet was underpowered but he was literally fighting a clone of himself, if anything he was even more powerful than Cavill's version by having to fight himself and with Lex having created an algorithm to counteract Supes' moves. Cavill fights a Kryptonian that hadn't had the long term exposure to the Earth's yellow sun like he'd had his entire life. I liked Corenswet's quirky-ness and felt he embodied a more good natured and hopeful version of Clark. Don't get me wrong, I still felt that Cavill was a good Superman, but that his potential was squandered by poor writing.

    I get it works in the context of the plot, the characterization just didnt work for me. When I say he's underpowered, what I mean is I wish there were more moments where he's SUPERMAN and not just a super guy. There weren't many of those WOW moments, to me, where you and all the other characters are just astounded by his raw power. He struggles through the whole movie and that's just not the version of Superman I like, I guess.

    The JLU animated series version is more how I see Superman so that's kinda the model I judge the live action movies against

    I get it, I'm a big fan of Superman the Animated Series and the whole Timm era too. But I'm more partial to a more human Superman, the new animated My Adventures with Superman and this new movie encapsulate that perfectly for me.

    Eh, I still think he was pretty damn impressive. I mean he literally lifted an entire Kaiju and a skyscraper and taking on the Planet Watch contingent like a hot knife through butter.

    But yeah, everyone has their favorite version of Supes, some people like Dean Cain, other like Tyler from Superman and Lois. Personally there's something to like from every iteration for me, but I'm a HUGE Superman fan myself.

    You just found the words for me, thanks! I've had trouble explaining to people why I didn't love the most recent movie. I guess I prefer God-Superman rather than human Superman. I'm glad you liked this rendition though -- here's hoping Supergirl is good too!

    Yeah, it is fun to watch god-tier Superman with a more aloof, pragmatic outlook, although it's that alien pragmatic outlook that makes it hard for me to enjoy that iteration as much.

    Definitely, I really hope Supergirl is a good flick too.
