You still have to trust the VPN provider with your logs as well as Quad9 with your DNS requests. There are examples of VPN providers that have said "we delete your logs" when in fact they do not. On the other hand, I have to trust that Apple is not logging my browsing. To me, the private relay approach appears to guarantee that but obviously there's some risk no matter how you do it.
