They're mean, I'd rather defederate them.

I saw this and checked your comments .. you seem to be combative to people who are being sincere in trying to engage. If you don't want to engage with them, just tell them to disengage without saying anything else or block the users. I find it interesting to say you're an anarcho communist and then immediately jump to defederating from an entire instance with hundreds of users because you got into a back and forth with one or two people. Doesn't seem to be very aligned with the principles of collectivism to demonize hundreds of people because of the actions of an individual.

    Funny how y'all always show up to other community's internal discussions on you. Wouldn't it be better to leave them to defederate if that's what they end up choosing?

    I'm on ml and this is at the top of my front page, nothing about this post really indicates it as an internal discussion

    Is that supposed to mean that only reddthat members are allowed to participate? Because that's not really made obvious if that's the case. I've always known instance specific comms to be open to everyone to chime in unless otherwise specified in the comm rules (of which there appear to be none in this case)

    I sort by new and a post appears, am I not allowed to comment? Why are you trying to police other users from expressing themselves on a forum? The nature of federated instances allows for cross communication between different instances, this is the point of the way it is designed. I made sure to check the rules of the instance and I'm not breaking any by politely pointing out that the OP is being disingenuous and has other solutions to control the content they see without blaming hundreds of people for one person's actions.

    If an instance collectively chooses to defederate because one user got upset for being told off after trolling, it has nothing to do with me. Until that happens, I'll keep seeing posts from this instance on my feed and comment as I wish, thanks officer.

    I think they're just pointing out that it's strange to offer an opinion on a post that deals with internal politics. Sure, it's public. Everybody can comment, but it's like going to somebody else's house unsolicited and offering an opinion about where their family should eat dinner. It would likewise be strange if I offered my opinion about what the rules at Hexbear should be. It's not my house.

    Nobody is stopping you from offering your opinion here, but it's strange to offer it in the first place, in this particular context.

    If it was about defederating with other people I would agree, but if it's a bad faith criticism of the instance I am also a part of, it's essentially about me. If someone is openly talking shit about my house from next door because they are upset about not getting their way in some petty dispute they participated poorly in with someone in my building, it feels fine to me to chime in and say what I said. Again, the rules of reddthat community support don't say it's just for locals (unless I missed something), and by the nature of federation it would be assumed that others can see and comment on any of these posts. If your support channel is supposed to be only for users if the instance, that could be a good change to make.

    I doubt he cares whether you federate or defederate. He’s pointing out that OP is misrepresenting the interactions. If OP posted “I don’t like the opinions that hexbears tend to hold, and I think we should defederate” it wouldn’t be a problem—that’s stating a valid preference, and doesn’t involve defaming an entire community.

    Also, are you aware you can block instances and users? I’ve used that recently with the .world instance and its users, as .ml is federated with them, and while they post somewhat interesting articles, they are completely unpleasant to interact with in good faith—anything they don’t agree with means you’re a Russian propagandist and they threaten you with stupid flags and reports. The mods aren’t so bad, but I just got tired of forgetting what the instance was and finding out it was another person who has no intention discussing anything. My solution was to just… block the instance. They don’t want to interact with diverse opinions, and I don’t want to interact with them, win-win.

    It won’t keep Hexbear users out of your comment sections, but honestly good luck either way in that, as I’m guessing most people have multiple accounts depending on their interests. I was a Hexbear user first ages ago, but got this .ml account when I moved to lemmy proper during one of the many Reddit exodus waves a while back before Hexbear was federated.
