I'm getting obsessed with Plan 9 and I'd love to do something using this palette, but I don't have any good ideas.

Any particular fedi platform or open source app icon you'd like to see in Pixelart?
Please feel free to drop your suggestions.

Image is the current list of apps/platforms.

For those unfamiliar with r/place, the canvas event presents all fediverse users with a giant blank canvas, which is then collectively drawn on. Each user can place down a single pixel every 30 seconds anywhere on the canvas for the duration of the event, which is 48 hours.

You can see a timelapse of last year's Canvas event here.

This limitation means the only way to assemble a larger piece of art is for people to come together in groups to collectively decide what they’ll be drawing (usually with a pixel art template someone proposes), where it will be on the canvas, and communicate with other groups working on neighboring artworks so as not to impede their efforts, or even to negotiate mutual aid treaties to help maintain each other’s art from potential hit-and-run attacks.

The Canvas Event will take place at this link, and here is their official post about it for more details.

Mastodon users can follow #Canvas2026 for more updates :)

On Art On Mobile

This is directed at somemany, and it's here cuz appie thought it would benefit more folk.

Appie is all about not having a computer, yet still being able to draw, code, manage files, etc.

Yall's options are many, if willing to draw on an Android device. Will drop some words here, in case yall are willing to try:

Software:

  • Digital/Vector/Pixel -> Krita is available on Android. Krita is best used on a device with a wide screen (like an tablet). Or you could screen cast phone to a TV.
  • Pixelart PixaPencil/Pixelorama/Libresprite. Pixelart is a good place to start, and yall could focus on transferable skills (colors, anatomy, composition, etc)
  • Traditional art. Yall's sticker would be so uniqe, of it were photos or printer scans of traditional art.

For Krita, a wide screen, a keyboard and mouse, and a touchscreen pen, are preferable. But appie doesn't have any of the former, she uses Krita on a small screen, she learned a lot of tricks to navigate through the UI. She currently uses Krita as a general image manipulation program.

Yall could also draw traditional, then extract lineart on Krita, and color in Krita.

For pixelart, would recommend PixaPencil as it's the simplest, then Pixelorama if yall needed more features and control. Libresprite only if yall have a wide screen and/or mouse and keyboard.

Get Krita and PixaPencil on F-Droid.

Get Pixelorama and Libresprite from their respective github releases.

Wired mouses and keyboards can be plugged into a phone using a Type-C to USB converter dongle thingy. Yall can find it on those Chinese amazon-esque sites.

Or much better, get bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Have fun, and remember that limitations only birth new forms and ways to do art.

PS: Highly recommend Termux too. For rescaling, recoloring, trimming, animating pixelart and stuff, using shell commands.

I drew this a year or so ago during an emotionally challenging time wrt gender etc. GIMP FTW.

I still feel like I don't quite understand myself.

Songs of Conquest is a fun little game by a Swedish developer, scratches that Heroes of Might and Magic II itch pretty well. I also enjoyed the fact it's one large story told from a few perspectives so you get to see the same incidents and their reprecussions from multiple POVs etc.

Here's the gameplay trailer:

Anyway, thought you fine folks might enjoy a free and beautiful pixel art game!

These were made on Android using PixaPencil, and Termux (git, imagemagick), plus a little bit of Android krita.

Find them now (and further updates) on https://codeberg.org/iloveena/pink-kube

Use them on matrix by joining this room #the-sticker-box:chat.blahaj.zone

We'll maintain and improve as we learn more about pixelart, as well as adding new ones.

Licensed under CC BY NC SA! Meaning you can download and use these on your favorite platforms! As long as you credit the artist(s) in this case a link to the repo and/or our fedi handle @reilyh@blahaj.zone would be appreciated!

Made some pixel emojis on Android using PixaPencil

They're called "Pink Cube" and you can find them here #the-sticker-box:chat.blahaj.zone

This is a new sticker room, that would only house stickers we made, or stickers with permissive licneses

We will share them on our codeberg at some point. We'll make an annoucement about it on our fedi account
