They're the words of Englishman, H. G. Wells, published in 1901 in The First Men in the Moon. This sentence completely blew my mind, it seems completely alien to me.

Here's the context:

The Grand Lunar was so incredulous that he interrupted the translation of what I had said in order to have my verification of my account. They particularly doubted my description of the men cheering and rejoicing as they went into (? battle).

We're not setup for hot weather, so we resort to all kinds of things to keep us and our homes cool.

Apart from ordering fans from Amazon, what else have you been doing to keep cool?

I used to get them fairly regularly - 4 a month perhaps.

Then I started writing stuff critical of Isreal in the 'What do you think the UK does best?' question.

Now I don't get any surveys.

Hi UK. I’ve recently moved here and I find myself wanting to buy a puffer jacket (not normally a thing back home).

From what I can gather, the old Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jackets used to be the go-to recommendation, but it seems that line was replaced by the newer Pufftech range, which people don’t seem nearly as enthusiastic about.

So what are people buying these days instead? I’m after something fairly lightweight and packable that I can layer under a raincoat rather than a huge standalone winter jacket.

Would appreciate any recommendations (especially good value options).

Generally just curious how often people on here in the UK tend to use it. Personally I use it 95% of the time due to privacy concerns, easier budgeting & wanting to maintain its use. Most people my age (early to mid 20s) seem to find the concept alien & I've noticed younger cashiers are absolutely garbage at calculating change mentally.

If you're pushed in it'll be no different to being pushed into one of those kid's pools. Are all these people being pushed in and drowning less than 3 feet tall so they can't touch the bottom?

If someone said "watch out, there's a canal pusher about", I'd say "yeah, my brand new Levis would totally drown in that dirty, elongated kiddy pool. The canal pusher is a murderer alright, murdering perfectly good clothes."

The shortest person I know is about 4 feet 10 inches. So, even if she slipped in, the water would only come up to her neck.

It's almost like drowning in a kiddie pool. Even if you can't swim, it doesn't make any sense to me.

And honestly good for them. I regularly hurt my back and neck now I'm older.

Especially with some places post covid or for security setting the tills behind glass windows it looks awkward as fuck reaching and leaning even a small amount but for 8 hours 5 days a week or whatever the shift pattern. You really don't know what that does to you until it comes for you.

Those over 30 mainly still bag for me but with my physical health, I wouldn't last even half a day. I would have to refuse on those grounds and have no doubt I'd get it in the neck from some customers, and management.

I often see Bombay sapphire for sale at supermarkets. I once saw an unopened bottle someone had in their house but I've never in my life seen anyone drink it.
