That's good to know, not having looked into it myself. Sorry about your stressful pocket square though, hopefully at least restoring it came with a nice wee break from the stress firehose. Maybe I should get a Graphene phone with duress PIN after all...

That's cool! It's the kind of project I'd love to do, but I know it wouldn't actually get used. Aside from how kids his age haven't really been exposed to much broadcast TV, so many shows these days are serialised as a consequence of the whole streaming phenomenon!

I lament the death of the episodic format often, because it intrinsically respects your time more. Serialised shows all have the confidence to say "hang on, it gets really good in about an hour and a half", which is bullshit. Serialised shows know that they need to command your attention within a couple minutes, and the scripts are so much more tight and compelling as a result.

I would absolutely run my own pirate TV channel, like the pirate radio DJs of old. I just don't have the IT or legal wherewithal to put my hand on that chopping block. But I could definitely bring the content and arrangement to an outfit doing something like that.

Can I be an atheist in this foxhole with you? I feel that tension too, between the world I wish to create and the fact that there's seemingly an insurmountable friction between where we are and where that would be. It can feel like it would be too violent a change to achieve in one lifetime. I keep coming back to the idea that war is ultimately a failure of imagination. We failed to envision a path forward where everyone can live. That's war.

And there's tension between my personal pacifism and my imagination with regards to societal change. Maybe like socialism, pacifism has to be an ideal rather than a standard, a Zeno's paradox in ideological terms. Perfection being the enemy of good, maybe some people need killing.

Pacifism is the goal, just as much as anarchism and socialism. We live in an imperfect world, though. For my part, knowing you struggle and lament, I can't help but forgive your imperfections. We love a Luigi, but we have to remember that he too is a symptom - not a hero.

I've never implemented a duress password. Ideally the wipe would look like an unrelated glitch and not all "SELF DESTRUCT INITIATED BY DURESS PASSWORD, ACAB MODE ENGAGED". A duress password should look like it's about to work, and then the phone says "oops, battery error. Plug me in while I run some diagnostics, tee hee". Otherwise it's shit.

This project has evolved from a prior submission. https://feddit.uk/post/41070161

I ended up with an LCD screen on my CPU pump for some reason, so I decided to play around with it, make it mine. Let me see if I can get a video up... Yep!

    https://files.catbox.moe/lysbqk.mp4

I did the video editing in kdenlive, I think it was a vertigo effect and one other, which I'm forgetting.

...yeah, it's time. I've finally found games I actually want to play that require a half-decent machine, I make all my money on the computer, and I regularly do video editing as well. I always keep my machines for a long time, so they need to be as future-proof as possible and I can't justify saving up for a PC unless it's going to be good enough for the foreseeable future. So here's where my head is at, I'd be grateful for any advice.

tl;dr https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xjP3yF for the general idea, but I'm open to other ideas. It's going to be a linux machine, and all AMD since I hear the drivers work better/are less fiddly. Aesthetically, I like an all-white motif but looks are secondary to pure power and long life. I would like to be able to emulate PS4, Xbox 360, run S&box so my kid can make games, and render my clip shows at high speed. The budget I'm targeting is about £2k. Will mean saving up for a couple months. Parts I'm considering:

    CPU

    • Ryzen 9 9950X3D (I'm most excited about having a strong CPU, this one appeals to me even though it's a bit of a splurge)
    • Ryzen 9 7950X3D
    • Ryzen 9 7900X3D

    GPU

Anything AMD, 16gb preferred but at least 12gb. AMD RX 6800XT or higher perhaps. RX 7800 XT or similar would be great.

    Memory

16gb preferred, DDR5, not too fussy about brand. Maybe someday another 16gb if it becomes worthwhile.

    Storage

1 or 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD, any really who cares. I don't need a lot of storage, most of my games are lightweight indies or backed up on my server.

    Power Supply

Anything 850-1000w, preferably modular? I dunno.

    Cooling

Possibly an AIO liquid cooler. I'm iffy on that, would be happy with a fan if it's more recommended.

    Case

Fractal does a nice white wood effect one (North XL), as does Antec (Flux Pro). Happy with anything that matches, but don't really love showy RGB, prefer understated and clean looks.

Each week I create a 2-2.5 hour block of programming for the family to watch together over a nice breakfast. We call it Sunday Brunch Cartoons, and we're nearly two years into it without missing a day. I'm releasing a full list of our watch queue, with the hopes that you can think of something really good (or memorably bad) that we should include.

    No 70s Hanna-Barbera.

EDIT: Thanks, Lemmy!!! You've all delivered so many really exciting suggestions. There's enough on my 'shopping list' now to keep us going, well, basically forever - but what's another 10Tb of cartoons among friends?

Here's the full list of suggestions I've collected. In alphabetic order, this time. Thanks again!
