Give "'xsane" a look... featureful graphical frontend for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy). Simple, easy to use.

I use it often for work similar to yours

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XSane

  • Supports several scanning protocols; handles multiple image acquisition devices efficiently: scanners, cameras, video devices
  • Allows detailed prescan adjustments w/preview -- for example: select area ("...pick out individual photographs from the scan surface") , contrast, brightness, dpi, to name a few
  • Settings for professional scanning; available but not necessary to 'fiddle' with: https://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/computing/printing/xsane

    nano, vi, geany, kate...

I prefer nano - simple to use & always available. I manage remote systems often from my mobile using termius: config file editing, writing simple scripts for some analysis/automation tasks and recording task notes and status. Using a tablet I might use vi but generally prefer nano.

My right leg is injured and I'm old so I limp and am old and in the way. I don't give a damn if you call me gimp, a gimp, old or old gimp.

Geez, grow up already ya bunch cry babies. It's just a friggin name for an app. If you're insulted, hurt by that you really need to get a life.

An OLD adage: "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me"

I'm an old buzzard and walk with a limp so I'm certainly a gimp... and don't mind being called a gimp... or an old buzzard... even both at the same time... (and using '...' is a privelege of being "Old & In The Way" [band name, album & song title 1975...]...)...

Rather than editing PDFs directly, might it be possible to use LibreOffice (LO) Writer? Write, with all the features/facilities of a document editor that will likely meet all your needs. When the document is complete, export as PDF and e-sign the PDF with LO as well..

LibreOffice is community driven and developed software project, not the product of an American company.

'Bates' numbering: LO Writer supports creating custom page numbering formats/styles.

e-sign: e-sign the PDF with LO as well, reference links below

    Workflow

    an example workflow might be:

    • Create document templates, save read-only in network accesible location; only the template maintainer can edit/save the templates; law firm logo, letter head, watermarks, Bates numbering, etc.,
    • Author copies desired template to author's system and makes the copy writable,
    • Edits/saves drafts locally on author's system, or in a central, network accessible repository; backups, team access, preliminary/formal reviews, etc.
    • When final version is complete, export as PDF, and of course, save it as well
    • e-sign PDF using LO
