I'm trying to wrap my head around how authentication works with micro services.

Say we have a system, with a frontend, that communicates with an API gateway, which in turn communicates with all the micro services.

As I understand it, we authenticate the client in the API gateway, and if we trust the client, the request are forwarded to the micro services.

However, what is stopping a malicious actor from bypassing the API gateway and communicating directly to the micro services ?

Do we solve this problem using a firewall, so only trusted traffic reaches the micro services ?

Or do we still have API keys between the API gateway and the micro services ?

Or is there a third way ? :)

All the articles I've read seem to assume, that we can trust all traffic entering the micro services

I just read (most of) "To mock a mockingbird" and I really love the concept of combining puzzles with fiction. I've heard that "Alice in Wonderland" has some puzzles too. I've also just watched "Ludwig", which has an element of puzzles. Can you recommend any works that combine fiction and puzzles ? :)

Preferably more like "To mock a mockingbird" which has a heavy emphasis on the puzzle aspect :)

Also,a quick note. I don't feel like mentioning "To mock a mockingbird" and "Alice in Wonderland" without a disclaimer. The only women who appear in "To mock a mockingbird" only appear to be admired by the men and to cook for them. It could have much better diversity. "Alice in Wonderland" is written by Lewis Carroll who might be too fond of little girls (https://news.artnet.com/art-world/was-lewis-carroll-a-pedophile-his-photographs-suggest-so-237222).

A couple of days ago, hotspot and usb-tethering stopped working on my phone (running lineageOS).

I can still connect to the phone through hotspot and usb-tethering and my computer shows a connection just as it did before. However, no data passes through the connection. I'm connected to the phone, but I'm still offline.

I still have a connection to the internet on my phone. The only problem I experience on my phone, is that the settings application crash whenever I try to open hotspot settings.

Two things happened around the time, that it stopped working. First, I reached the limit on how much data I can use in my phone subscription, but it did reset for this month. The second was a systems update to lineageOS.

Are there any recommendations as to how I can fix this ? :)

Currently, it is possible to follow both Lemmy users and communities from Mastodon.

When you follow a user, all their posts and comments show up as posts on Mastodon.

When you follow a community. The community boosts all posts and comments made in the community.

I think it would work better, if for users, only posts showed up as posts and comments showed up as replies (meaning unlisted).

For communities, I think it would be better if only posts were boosted and not all the comments.

It is possible to find the comments by clicking on the post on Mastodon, so the comments would still be visible.

As it is now, following something from Lemmy from Mastodon is a noisy experience. I think it would be a lot better if only posts were boosted and shown as posts :)

I have some UV plant lights by my desk that are on often. Recently I started to worry if they are increasing my risk of skin cancer. Is that totally far out or should I try to point them away from where I work ?
