I don’t think your premise that it is going to grow more in terms of impact size is valid. It’s already eaten the US stockmarkets (and a number of others).

Stock market schmock market, this bubble is also doing damage to society and the environment and at least the part that comes from the lies and lobbying from "OpenAI" and consorts would be stopped by it popping.

People are disappointed that Linus is pro ai

Being "pro AI" in my book goes a lot further than what they are doing. Using generative "AI" for coding with human oversight and the high standard of code review they have is a far cry from wanting to cram LLM slop into everything as much as possible. I think it's good that they are trying to find security issues like this, for example.

FAKE NEWS! But I have a great idea here, maybe it is the best one folks, just fill the whole pool up with beautiful, highly reflective mercury. Or, as they call it, quicksilver. You know what quicksilver is? They used to have it in thermometers before they made them woke... And and I also hear that the algae don't like being in it very much! Just like looser liberals with box cutters. But if they want to reform, and I told JD about this already, we can do patriot baptisms in there as well! It's going to be great! The only thing that would be greater is if we filled it up with liquid gold, but we can't afford that now. Not after what OBAMA did. So the silver will have to do.

Why does learning not need to be effortful or not difficult or not oftentimes uncomfortable?

From the context the combination of these three words sounded to me like they are demanding kids sit still and focus for hours, and that if they fail then that's a lack of effort, determination or intelligence. You can work through a problem slowly and deliberately because it's hard to understand, that can feel very rewarding even if it's hard. But you can also be forced to mentally strain yourself for hours, not because of the subject itself is difficult but because the environment, the provided material, the pressure, ... make learning in and of itself take a lot more effort than it needs to.

Learning can take effort and be fun, that's true. Same goes for difficult. But if you put those two in with uncomfortable then I hear that it's meant to be painful, essentially. Goddamn kids need to sit still and learn, and they can not do anything else for hours, or else!

Learning is effortful, difficult, and oftentimes uncomfortable.

It doesn't have to be. Rote memorization always is for me, but that's not really learning. And you can focus on just about anything when the alternative is a shitty textbook poorly explaining something that just won't click with you. Look out the window, doodle, count the ceiling tiles, daydream about not being stuck in school, ...

In most jurisdictions you are always just buying a license, physical media or not. Except now you have a physical thing that you need to protect from damage/loss because it's tied to your license. Depending on where you are you might not even be legally allowed to create a backup, especially if there's DRM involved.

The only advantage I see with physical media is the used market. Digital kills that, and I'm sure that that's the big reason Sony is doing it. They don't want to take your games, they want to stop you from buying someone else's.

If they want to screw you over they will, they still control the full software stack. If you make a backup of the game you downloaded that might also simply not be allowed back on the machine, at least in theory.

What makes you think Sony/publishers will take away your games in some way that they don't already without physical media?
