In the article they talk about getting hit by millions of different IPs. It's probably on a different level compared to what a random, non-targeted site has to deal with.
A few years back when graphics cards were getting botted for resale, a friend of a friend was buying with bots using a (pricey) rotating list of hundreds of proxy addresses that would each make attempts at a very reasonable looking frequency. I'm picturing something like that, except with much more funding.
Users probably wouldn't be too damaged if an IRC server with a few public channels got hacked. I realize IRC isn't a true Discord alternative (and I realize that's what you were picturing when you commented- I'm not debating your point). I just can't imagine why a self hosting subreddit would need more than text chat + help bot.
Ahh yeah, if you were looking only at games with native support then you'd have found an extremely small pool. Even games with native Linux versions often run better with the Windows one using proton these days. The big holdout is anticheat, which developers can choose to manually disable Linux support for (which they're motivated to do since there's no way to get them running kernel-level like on Windows).
Fully agreed on warning people. It's weird to oversell something you want someone to be happy with, glazing over pitfalls that might turn out to be show stoppers just means there's a chance they'll have wasted their time. Even if they're willing to put up with the little issues in the end, you're setting them up for disappointment. It's better to go into a movie with low expectations and be surprised that it's half way decent vs going in expecting it to be a masterpiece right?
EDIT: On that note, I should add there's still a small handful of single player games that don't run well, as well as some others that require tweaks (manually setting the proton version and/or adding launch arguments) to play well. You should definitely check each game you care about out on protondb before making the switch, if you're considering it. The one I've had issues with was Forza 6 (I've since refunded it), which had occasional micro stutters that ruined the fun- it had just come out mind you so it may have since been fixed...
Are you talking about this Solarpunk? Because it has a platinum rating (which means it works flawlessly).
I had two family cars that were Fords in the late 80s and 90s. One (Taurus) had its front windshield randomly explode on a hot summer day, and its oil pan later rusted out. The other (Mustang) somehow had no back seat floor by the time it was 10 years old (completely rusted out).
I have no idea how they treated their employees back then, but you weren't missing much when it came to the vehicles unless you're talking about a time before I was around.
It depends on whether you play single player stuff or e-sports titles. The first category is fine, the latter is a crapshoot. Personally, I don't play heavy multiplayer stuff and at this point don't even check to see if a game will run before buying it (they all do), but I'd probably have bought a console by now if I liked playing the latter.
That said, everyone should use what works best for them.
Wait, why wouldn't you 3D print (or order) the official mainboard enclosure and use it as a cheap home server? You could at least sell it or pass it along to someone else who would.
I use k9mail with a work gmail account and it works great, has imap push and everything (no need for Google services).
It depends what country you're in. The US doesn't and Canada does (not sure about elsewhere).

I wrote a little script a while back that would save a temp file with fswebcam, run zbarimg on it to decode the qr, delete the temp file and if it worked it would pipe the output into xclip/wl-copy, otherwise it would try again (up to 8 times).
I hooked it up to a keyboard shortcut and I'll see the webcam light flash one or two times when I hit it, then know it's good.
It wouldn't be a ton of work to also have a popup with the qr value using zenity or something, maybe use the --question and pass it "copy $output to clipboard?". You could have an --error if all the scan attempts failed.

You can configure which features you want to have enabled. I have this running with just the gps locate functionaly enabled in case I misplace my phone or my wife wants to check to see if I'm almost home yet or something.
