Oh, right, safe phones for situations such as domestic abuse. I wasn't sure what they meant, and in the confusion I started wondering about whether the alert would trigger those phone-detonated bombs you see in spy films.

Facebook is literally full of people inciting others to break laws breaking laws and Facebook refuses to remove anything. Even violent incitement I’m seeing

Yes, stochastic terrorism is a real tactic for violence, and Facebook is one of the social media platforms enabling it.

For what it's worth, I managed to get rid of FB around 5-10 years ago (apart from recently creating a false identity sockpuppet recently due to That One Messenger Group you just can't move off the site!) and it's a small but sure weight off shoulders. That and Twitter are two of the worst mainstream sites, life is better without them at this point.

    In short:

Unionised staff at BHP's operations in Port Hedland have walked off the job for an eight-hour strike.

Family and supporters of the workers began gathering about half an hour before the strike began.

The ABC understands there has been no disruption to operations at the port, with BHP on track to load seven ships by 10pm tonight.

The survey also found that current vaping among 18-to-24-year-olds fell from a high of 20.6% in 2022–23 to 14%, while daily vaping remained stable across all age groups. This differed from previous surveys which reported rising vaping rates.

That's good to see, it's already concerningly normalised in a couple of my social circles.

The headline is probably obvious to most people here, but the article does go into some interesting detail, including small interactive guides to help people spot them.

I also recommend this far more interactive article about pokies (slot machines): https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/datablog/ng-interactive/2017/sep/28/hooked-how-pokies-are-designed-to-be-addictive

they fucked around and blocked affordable housing

And seeing the recent reports that affordable housing isn't affordable, I think they're right to demand public housing.

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-13/many-affordable-rental-listings-too-expensive-for-most-in-need/106902620

The analysis of about two months of affordable rental listings in New South Wales and Victoria found some properties on offer were actually being advertised above median market rates.

Our investigation also found cases of people being locked out of "affordable" rentals, seemingly because they did not earn enough.

Highlighting a couple of points from the bottom of the key findings:

    • A bystander was handcuffed by police for making a comment towards them as they were passing by the pub where the was sitting. The police handcuffed him in such a way that the handcuffs pierced his skin and his wrists were bleeding.

    • Continuing arrests of participants in the rally following the 9th of February have directly restricted the capacity of community members to provide evidence to the LECC, because participation now carries the risk that police will bring further prosecutions on the basis of relatively minor conduct.

This is in response to police and McHanon fencing arrived in the morning to fence off a zone. At least one activist was arrested.

Please show up and tell Homes NSW, McMahon Service & NSW police their thuggery is unacceptable.

More info on the private development of Waterloo public housing:

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-25/waterloo-public-housing-estate-fenced-off-ahead-of-demolition/106718016

    https://redflag.org.au/article/public-housing-demolitions-in-nsw-a-disgrace/

While Bellambi estate currently sits at 93 percent public housing, under the proposal, just 30 per cent will be “dedicated to social housing” (not even public housing)

The Waterloo redevelopment, which will take ten to fifteen years to complete, will result in a net gain of roughly 240 social housing units. And when you compare this with the NSW social housing waitlist of 69,051 households, the logic of demolishing existing public housing to increase the net total slightly over a ten-year period doesn’t make sense.

Some receipts for my edit to the headline about James Mason:

I am not a laywer, but I suspect this now qualifies as raising funds to support a proscribed group.

    • Tonight at 6pm, Stop the War on Palestine (SWOP) are hosting a public forum - "Why it's right to say 'Globalise the Intifada'". Speakers include Cumberland City councillor Ahmed Ouf, writer and lawyer Sara Saleh, plus Ed Carroll via video link (the Jewish activist and Queensland Progressive Party leader arrested for using the banned slogan)
    • There has been direct mentions of this event in mainstream media, particularly News Corp outlets, due to NSW Premier Chris Minns urging the City of Sydney to block the event. I also see some reactionary social media posters trying to stir the pot.
    • Because of this, I've heard concerns that there's an possible chance of counterprotest, and therefore it's important to ensure numbers at the even to dissuade any potential counterprotesters from starting problems.

Please share this around, and I hope to see you there!
