Welcome to Maplestory Developers!

This is a community for those who are interested or are already creating private servers of their own. There are many different ways one can go about creating a private server we aim to be an informational educational place to help others get started in the right direction. As such is our mission it will require a community effort in order to accomplish the goals needed to help others be able to accelerate development.

History

Maplestory is a mmorpg created in 2003 which has gone throughout many changes over the years including revamps of mechanics which the community of players liked & didn't like which caused the private server development which accelerated on forums like ragezone & many others that existed back then. But as time went on people got older other community forums shutdown, people who developed sources abandoned project where others have picked up those sources & continued development publically or privately. Throughout that time there was people who would try to sell privately better sources with more fixes & functionality restored to the game for profit.

The buyers would either host their own server with it to create an economy or make those private sources public to improve development which of course ruined sellers attempting to sell. While this went on for some time eventually it all ended with people moving on to other things in life as we all do. The game continues on today & newer generations pick up today sources they can find to continue where private server development dropped off.

The Problems That Must Be Faced!

They don't communicate in public or free open source locations most of those inspired used the proprietary spyware software discord a chat application advertised towards gamers & teens. As the world has become divided in choice of preferences of software for community development this fragments & hinders progression towards better developments. While we do have some options to work around which is something for few who may not care but for other's this is trying to in metaphor put a bandaid on a wound that needs surgery.

  1. Bridges

While people may use bots to bridge across platforms chat applications you are still feeding information to the proprietary network. FOSS users won't stay in places that do that because it's prison chains to spyware the whole point of being on another platform is to get away not be chained from afar.

  1. Scattered Information

Information is scattered across many websites for different versions of the game. Sources come from different versions of the game people worked on different versions because of all the drastic changes & expansions to the game. When the game began there was only 4 classes to choose from Warrior, Magician, Bowman, & Thief all the versions before they added the fifth class Pirate & others when it was only 4 classes is known online as before the big bang Pre-BB. Versions later then that with all the newer classes, the extra worlds, raids, bosses, revamp of leveling & zone guides are known as after the big bang Post-BB.

This information is scattered & not organized in the appropriate manner that someone could follow along to understand. Many of these guides are old with missing pictures that are suppose to show important steps leaving you in the trenches to test & hope for the best. This is only the inital problem with the information being mixed across places & unorganized the second problem we must face is the access to where one who contributes reside.

For those who are interested & probably working on it now as you read this is probably on discord the worst place to be for community development. This leaves foss people out of luck because people are getting smarter everyone's not just going to sign up to every place because it's where people or the hype is at. More people are reading terms of services & privacy policies before considering registering the ethical standards of operators also providers is becoming more a questionable concern.

People do not want to have to allow spyware into their lives to turn their devices into tracking & recording beacons for providers & their partners of their entire livelyhood in order to gain access to one community to be apart of something!

  1. One Way Or No Way!

Newer generations are familiar with a heavily commerical advertised software known as docker which is for operating images & container's of bundled software to run a website or game server. Docker is not the first software to create containers & images this has actually existed long before docker existed the first software was called Jails which is still used today by many in the linux community. There is even a superior software which can do everything docker does & more called Podman which uniquely featured can run images & containers without requiring root access on your pc unlike docker which requires root & a schedule task to run a container or image.

Before these existed private servers were hosted on peoples pcs or hosting servers with all the software installed & running simultaniously like MySQL Workbench, IDE of preference, cmd prompts open with .bats. The image container system saves time by bundling it all together so you don't have to configure it all manually, constantly apply certain changes, start things in certain order. IntelliJ is an IDE software which you can use to edit server files & establish Maven path. There are many other IDE software applications that can do the same thing so you don't have to only use this one if you don't want to.

The problem we must face is how we act with guiding & advising most people as far as i've seen act like if it's not docker & intellij it cannot be done. Please make it a point to not be that person private servers have been made since the 90s MapleStory, World of Warcraft, Gunz, Mu Online & many others had private servers long before docker & intellij existed so none of that it cannot be done theres more then one way to do everything. We must be adaptable in learning so we can help everyone for fair usage.

Some people may want to host for example a pre-bb v0.83 server on a vm running windows xp because of how lightweight it is or have everything for it. Others for example may just want to play solo a specific version like a post-bb server on their old machine for example a v149 server on their windows 7 machine. Maybe someone who refused to update to windows 8, 8.1, 10, or 11 wants to play the later versions which Nexon dropped windows 7 in coding support on their pc like a v206 server so they could experience the new featuress like the fith & sixth job advancements, the arcana rivers & etc.

The games graphics hasn't changed just certain parts of what it's written in. Which together as a foss community we can fix for those who can no longer play & access their characters on gms. Together only then will we as a community be able to begin to tackle those issues as we build the foundations of an educational place.

  1. Unity

People are fickle & thinking with AI & what they know alone is good enough to just work on their own developing their server with their own intentions. It's great you have plans & you want to host your own server online but competitions going to always exist & there would be more help to cause if people were unified. Together if more people taught others in an organized place united for the acceleration of development people who have their own plans would have an easier time customizing their servers to either create the vanilla experience or customize it to their heart's intent with ease.

When people are united towards a goal things happen faster & with better results then expected lets strive to become that united for acceleration & ease of development.

Preparing the Solution

There is a plan to create the appropriate context & solve all the problems I mentioned above it will unfold in stages as the community grows. I can do much on my own but I cannot do it alone I need you the community to unite with effort for all maplers who want to self-host their own servers for their purposes. If you wish to get involved being here apart of this community is the first step on lemmy just showing your interest proves you want to be apart of something.

To be apart of that something is to get in touch as there's a url to a coding forum left for you to check out which there we may coordinate the stages & steps involved as we go forward in building the foundations of an all in one maplestory server informational center https://codings.zulipchat.com/. I recommend the forums only to those who truly comprehend what we are building here & want to be apart of it for the long haul what we do is voluntary work & if you've got talent it's appreciated what you teach the more everyone learns the better. What I build together here with other maplers I will ensure the information for server development is contexted, publicly accessible to everyone in multiple places, & backed up so it may not be forever lost.

I thank everyone for taking the time to read this & hope you all may want to become apart of the community!

Another step forward proving that once again newer operating systems are not required that these new features could have just been made to work with these operating systems from the gecko. There are many people who use older operating systems for different reasons. Reddit uses windows 98 to host a server running their Pixlr feature. Other people use them for the natural compatability for older games or to run web emulators for people online to browse & play retro games.

There are many developers who create software for older operating systems like VxKex a software application made to handle the .dll calls that newer software calls for which is only avaliable on windows 8, 8.1, 10, & 11. VxKex handles these dlls so a higher windows application can run on an older operating system. It was originally created to keep Windows 7 alive which now because of VxKex many programs made for windows 10 or higher can run on windows 7,

VxKex doesn't work with every application but as more foss developers are drawn to it's project page it has expanded compatability with many newer softwares. It's great to see developers making applications like these the future of Microsoft & it's products are AI, spyware technologies, & redefining PC from personal computer to public computer. Because of this downward sloap more people are either turning to linux or older windows refusing to update & looking for tactics to prevent forceful update for certain applications like the steam & epic game stores. I appreciate developers who create these softwares & are devoting time to keeping windows 7 alive.

The scare of EOL meaning no more security updates does not mean the operating system is completely vulnerable or your 99.9% going to get hacked if you use it. People who do not understand tech usually just follow the ladder & repeat what they hear which is that spew of nonsense & you should update like your so fragile unless you do update to the latest OS. Is there potential risk sure but the odds if someone going out of their way just to get to know about you, your os, & then take the time to figure how to hack you is slim like next to none slim.

Even so I would imagine the foss community would pick up major known exploits & write custom patches because there is a good handful of people around the world still using older operating systems & continue to support them long after EOL. Just look at the keep7alive community. I hope more people get involved in projects which aim to make windows 11 & future os specific functionalities be compatable with older oses to be closer to fully bridging the gap in compatability allowing any future applications to run on older operating systems like windows 7.

Could you provide some examples of malware to break into windows 7 that work since it's last security update? Everyone says no more security updates so it's a risk everythings a risk even windows 11 is a risk that doesn't mean lets just not use it. Where is the proof of this malware that people still use it today, where is the example or video that shows this?

What exact modern features that are operating system essential does it have that could not be applied?

Windows 7 may no longer be supported from Microsoft but there are many users who still use it as their everyday operating machine for their desktop. Gamers even still game on Windows 7 due to compatability with the games & mods since many of them originally were created during the prime era of Windows 7. So why do applications which originally supported it remove the code so it no longer doesn't?

There are many groups which advocate amongst the % of users who still use Windows 7 everyday to keep Windows 7 alive! A program called Vxkex was made specifically to handle the api & .dll calls that Windows 8, 10, & 11 handled so that applications which wouldn't normally run on Windows 7 does. Why do companies like Steam, & Epic Games remove the code that supports Windows 7 & gives you notification that you will have to upgrade to keep using their software?

Why do some companies like Rufus hide specific features for users who are on Windows 7?

Version 3.22 (2023.03.25) Add SHA-1 and SHA-256 x86 acceleration on CPUs that support it (courtesy of Jeffrey Walton)

Add an option to disable BitLocker device encryption in the Windows User Experience dialog

Add a cheat mode (Ctrl-P) to preserve the log between sessions

Fix potential media creation errors by forcing the unmount of stale WIM images

Fix potential access errors in ISO → ESP mode by forcing Large FAT32 formatting

Fix user-specified label not being preserved on error/cancel

Fix some large SSD devices being listed by default

Fix processing of Rock Ridge CE fields Work around the use of Rock Ridge symbolic links for Linux firmware packages (Debian)

Remove the ISO download feature on Windows 7

Note: This is the last version of Rufus that can run on Windows 7

There's no need to exile those who choose to remain & still use 7 for everyday gaming or productvitiy. When creating software you shouldn't exclude a operating system if you want to support Windows. Theres nothing today that 7 couldn't support with the right libraries.

The web is a infinite span with over trillions of sites to see & explore. The depths of what we can learn is by as far as we are willing to go. Never be scared to checkout a new site on the internet you have many options.

Knowledge is key to exploration, security, anonymity, & archiving. What we discover should be shared & protected as it becomes apart of the ever growing global culture. What's given at convenience, commerical advertising, & policy agreements should never be enough you can always discover more.

What do you try to find when you search online?

    P2P What is it? (programming.dev)

Peer to peer technology is software that directly connects you to another individual without a server in the middle. it acts as both the client & server to share files across a network. Such a decentralized network uses resources more efficiently than a traditional network and is less vulnerable to systemic failure.

P2P file sharing was introduced to the general public in 1999 when American college student Shawn Fanning created the music sharing service Napster. It employed a centralized index server, which users would search on the basis of song title or artist name. If the index located the song on the hard drive of any other computer that was currently connected to the network, a user could download a personal copy while simultaneously offering his or her own computer supplied files in response to other users’ searches. The service quickly became a hub for larges cale unauthorized distribution of copyrighted music, and in 2001 it was shut down as a result of a lawsuit from members of the American recording industry.

Looking to step away from spyware such as Discord, Telegram, Whatsapp, & Gmail? There's many applications which are bad because they monitor you & share their collection of data with other companies. Open source applications allow the public to inspect a application's code & anyone can verify it does exactly what it's intended to do.

You can email without a provider collecting the contents of the email, you can instant message without a service provider logging messages & you can share directly with someone using peer to peer technology. Below is a list of alternatives you can look into to replace any proprietary services you may use.

    Proprietary | Open Source

There's more you can search for to find replacements to proprietary services!

    Archivebox (archivebox.io)

ArchiveBox is a powerful, self hosted internet archiving solution to collect, save, & view websites offline.

Without active preservation effort, everything on the internet eventually disappears or degrades. Archive.org does a great job as a centralized service, but saved URLs have to be public, and they can’t save every type of content. ArchiveBox is an open source tool that lets organizations & individuals archive both public & private web content while retaining control over their data.

It can be used to save copies of bookmarks, preserve evidence for legal cases, backup photos from Facebook, Instagran, Flickr, Youtube, Soundcloud, & etc. It's important as an archiver that everyone self hosts & continues to share with each other everything to have multiple instances with the same files backed up & shared across each other.

Archive.org gets law suits & removes over 1.5million files of music, movies, tv shows, & music. You can't trust one centralized source so spread the word & preserve with your instance of Archivebox.

    What it's All About! (programming.dev)

All I want to do is just explore the internet & check things out without a overseer watching my every move & building profiles out of me. The internet holds many wonderful softwares which can benefit us all every day. In the beginning people wanted to build things to be better then it became a product like everything else has in the world.

Features locked behind serial keys, pro versions, 30 day trials & etc it became a business to pay for the best. Then as the years go on the moneymaker changed due to foss alternatives appearing & people phasing out on checking new stuff out the honeypot became knowing what your up to. Collecting the whereabouts & knowing your habbits has become a big profit there are many different type of companies who are interested in knowing.

Knowledge is power so is knowing what people like & a majority is up to. Now technology has become convenience requires sacrifice you get something easy to you all handled by them & in exchange your device is their recording device they know everything your browsing your device's operating system & model. Theres more they can learn & what's scary is it's all legal a stalker outside is more safer then this.

It's important to know alternatives do exist so you can enjoy the same features without sacrifice! Theres chat instant messenger applications which do let you chat without a central server handling them you can directly communicate without someone in the middle! You can have an email service without the provider logging & selling your email information. You just have to be willing to search & switch today to set yourself free & be one step safer then before!

PrivateBin is a minimalist, self hostable open source online pastebin where the server has zero knowledge of pasted data.

Data is encrypted and decrypted in the browser using 256bit AES in Galois Counter mode.

This is a fork of ZeroBin, originally developed by Sébastien Sauvage. PrivateBin was refactored to allow easier and cleaner extensions and has many additional features. It is, however, still fully compatible to the original ZeroBin 0.19 data storage scheme. Therefore, such installations can be upgraded to PrivateBin without losing any data.

You can find multiple instances at https://privatebin.info/ or use the official one at https://privatebin.io/
