Bird-friendly Coffee Suggestions/Discussion (lemmy.ml)

Coffee cultivation has quite the ecological impact, specifically on birds as it often entails deforestation for higher yields and destroys habitats. The National Smithsonian has a bird-friendly certification which comes along with a website that helps you learn more and find bird-friendly certified coffees.

I wanted to share my own experience and ask if others had come across this and had recommendations for bird-friendly coffees that taste good.

Living on the east coast I actually really enjoyed:

  • Rockin Cat Coffee. It tasted good, delivery times were quick which gave me confidence as to their small-batch roasting methods, and the coffee I got out of the beans was nice. I remember my favorite one being their Honduras Marcala.

Now that I live on the west coast I've been on a search for a roaster closer to me to avoid lengthy delivery times. I've really only tried:

  • Thanksgiving Coffee. I can't give them as much praise as Rockin Cat just cause I've not tried all their roasts. I got the Guatemalan SongBird roast and it was ok. It didn't really have all the wonderful complexity and sweetness of some other single-origin non-bird-friendly roasts I've tried.

That's all, wanted to start a conversation, get some suggestions for US West Coast-located bird friendly roasters with really good beans. If it helps, I typically switch between making espresso and pour over for my daily cup.

I think a world without coffee is definitely one of those things we really fail to conceptualize. It feels so foreign to think an entire crop could become a luxury because our leaders continue to fail to hold big polluters accountable and in check.

Individualistic shopping habits won't save us, but I do still wish to find one or two roasters I can really feel a little more conscience-clear shopping from.

    Yeah and its all the more annoying when they acknowledge the cliff as if we're supposed to clap for them.

    E.g. "climate change is the #1 existential threat" "OK will your campaign commit to revoking fracking and mining licenses on federal land?" "WOAH don't be CRAZY"

    I won't find y'all the MLK quote for it, y'all know it. But it is legitimately more frustrating to hear a white liberal tell me we'd be eating caviar at brunch if only Kamala had been elected than hearing a Trumper tell me he's doing nothing wrong.

    Part of it is I don't need to build a coalition with MAGA, but this blue no matter who person is actively halting progress in the "lesser evil" party.

    Maybe McKay meant that, maybe not. Dudes a rich white liberal anyways so I hope he's self aware when he says this.

    In all seriousness this is giving big "I'm OK with gays but can they just not shove it in my face?" energy. Reevaluate how your phrase this argument.

    Gonna assume you want much more control than this but something that really helped me understand what each arr component did was using an automated script to stand everything up. If you're using something like proxmox or a VM I really liked yams.media as the steps are laid out very straight forwardly.

    After about a year of running that and moving my home server to TrueNAS I now stand up all my own containers using dockge and docker compose. But IMO its easier to start easy

    FYI all those "dislike count" plugins seem to be wildly inaccurate. No idea why but the counts rarely match what YouTube studio will say is the dislike count on the uploader's side.

    I think this may be a your milage may vary thing. I only personally use netbird for remote server management, as I barely consume anything other than streamed music remotely. I host netbird community edition on my server in a VM so the streaming quality isn't dependent on any tier of service purchased from the company

    I'll recommend netbird as its entirely running on your server, is free, and I found it way easier to set up compared to Tailscale/Headscale

    Trying to load my usual Proton Mail web app and I get an error that is completely un-bypassable. Details of the error say "This version of Firefox is no longer supported due to a bug in the WebCrypto API. Please Update to a newer version".

    Has anyone encountered this and found a fix? Not sure the devs are aware either. Any info is appreciated.

    EDIT: Issue was somehow my LibreWolf was not updating as a result of various package manager repo things. Manually updating the install to the latest version fixed this problem.
