Mixed results at best. Violent solutions have to be overwhelmingly successful, incredibly thorough and over fast. Otherwise, the problem drags on in quagmire. Generations of hatred and endless, cyclical violence that solves nothing.

And arguably in the modern world, direct violence is incredibly inefficient. Propaganda and having a country tear itself apart from the inside is easier, cheaper and poses way less risk. It's people's willingness to jump to violent solutions that makes them malleable to a more stochastic approach and actually leaves them more vulnerable in the long run.

Also, violence against certain groups is plenty dramatic but is counter to the most pleasing narrative, so it also gets left on the cutting room floor. There's an entire genre of post on the Internet of people being amazed at things they were never taught, that never got a movie or TV show made about it. Black Wall Street, The 1945 Firebombing of Tokyo, Battle of Blair Mountain, the Samar Campaign. And that's just shit the Americans did.

You guys are wimps. (Dog guy gets partial points though, people are psychotic about their dogs). Here's an actual hot take:

Sex drive, while a strong biological impulse in most people, is nowhere NEAR as powerful or persuasive as we are conditioned to believe. Its almost entirely cultural and formed from Movies, Porn, Advertising and just about every other media artificially elevating it.

Everything, from lighter fare like niche fetish communities, to dark shit like rape, sexual violence and, in some cases misogynistic violence aimed just at women in general, is escalated and enabled by a mass permission structure where we all are just told, and to some extent believe, that Sex is SO powerful. Men become easily manipulated puppets to demonic seductresses. Sexuality can damage reasoning ability. Without sexual release men inevitably become violent brutes. A million other stupid, widely believed things. They have a kernel of truth obviously but they are exaggerated in the extreme, usually to excuse poor behavior by men who are trained from a young age that they not only can, but should turn into a drooling gorilla at the sight of tits.

The internet isnt horny. Men aremt primarily sex-driven. Its all an artificial cultural construct designed to promote bad behavior.

The instinct when you see these stories is to say something like "America, ICE didn't stop because the news stopped covering it" or "One day it'll all come out how bad this really is, and this will be a mark of shame closer to Trail of Tears than Japanese internment" ( what a glorious country to be able to produce a tier list internet video of atrocities in like, a speedrun time frame relative to other nations).

But the truth is, both statements assume willing or enforced ignorance on behalf of the American people and that's a lie. America knows, explicitly this is happening and most either dont care, or love it. The minority of Americans who would stop this would have to risk their personal safety to do anything and thats a big ask when a little less than a third of them even think its an issue.

Americans writ large are either, stupid, cruel or both.

I'm just thinking in big franchises, because I'm not a well-schooled film-nerd. But even I can think of a lot of examples of sequels better than the originals.

It's a matter of taste, but I think Rocky 2 is the strongest film in the franchise. I think it's more commonly believed that Aliens is a stronger film than Alien. Evil Dead 2 is better than Evil Dead, but that might not count since its a soft reboot. Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan is pretty much a classic example. Terminator 2 is a very different movie than Terminator 1, making comparison weird but it's usually regarded as better. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 is arguably stronger than Spider-Man, though obviously 3 was a bit of a mess.

Going to put this in a separate section. Admittedly, whether this should count is arguable. Still, If you count Marvel movies as direct sequels to others, it gets ridiculously easy: Thor: Ragnarok is so much better than all the other Thor movies its kind of nuts. Winter Soldier is stronger than First Avenger and Civil War might be better than both. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the strongest film in that franchise.

Yeah I dont know how the army does it, but civilian aircraft would have to be "repaired" by being stripped and rebuilt or they'd never be considered flight ready. The distinction between destroyed and damaged is just the Air Force saving face.

Colbert's genuine affection for Tolkien is common knowledge, Im glad he found a way to stay busy after May.

But for the love of God, stop trying to juice more movies out of LOTR.

On the one hand, she did start with sympathy before she made her stupid ass comment.

On the other hand, it was unbelievably stupid and in support of a pointless war in the middle east.

But for context, I can't imagine any Republican winning in Minnesota this year, so maybe she's just running a sacrificial lamb campaign to launch her career as a right wing grifter.

People using a term incorrectly doesn't rob the term of meaning. Enshittification is an ongoing process across hundreds of web services and other industries. It remains a set definition, regardless of colloquial use. It remains a useful and insightful concept, regardless of mass appeal or adoption.

You're mad at people diluting the definition, but they can't do that; They can only demonstrate their own ignorance.

If you're the type of person who wants to punch a wall when someone says "irregardless", then you learn to judge words by their utility, not their use case.

No one under him is qualified for bridge crew. Every single person not named in the credits on Voyager is completely incompetent. Promote Kim and you have to promote crewman Bushnell who thinks Warp drive opens a portal to hell everytime, smells awful and calls all women "females".

This is a long, exhausting and difficult read. The absurdity, cruelty, stupidity, and savagery illustrated within is enough to make you need to lie down.

But there is also an inspiring clarity, repeated multiple times simply saying "This is wrong. This is murder. This isn't complicated, really, and pretending it is, is nothing more than an indulgence to protect American ego."

I'd like to read that sentiment more often, in more places.

Steam is full of asset-flip garbage and clunky "chase-the-fad" nonsense. But in an environment where only the best of the best get any real attention, what's your secret "I can't believe I ever stumbled across this" gem?

Bonus points if it feels personal or revealing of the creator, but that's not necessary. Bonus points if its fun to play, but again not necessary. My only real requirements is that almost no one has heard of it, and the project was eventually finished. What I'm looking for is the weirdest "complete" experience you've ever found on Steam.

So, some friends of mine tried "Fragpunk" last night and dragged me into trying it. Short version - don't bother, I didn't last 2 hours. It's insanely jam packed with currencies and predatory micro-transactions, the most boring character designs I've ever seen in the genre, AI Slop art, insanely ugly weapon models, and it's published by NetEase. That's like a hundred red flags for what is, at best, a competent 5v5 hero shooter.

But one of the ways they talked me into at least giving it a shot was one friend was convinced (by AI lying to him) that Bad Guitar Studios was Canadian. Upon scrutiny that wasn't even a little true but it DID get me thinking, are we making any cool games up here in the North?

I found some stuff with basic Googling. Compulsion games just released South of Midnight and that looks pretty good, though it's owned by Microsoft. Pheonix Labs made Dauntless, I didn't know they were Canadian. There's a bunch of tiny mobile developers. But I thought maybe other people might have more insight. Does anybody have an awesome game made by Canadians that they can point me towards?
