I had a mineralogy professor that was notorious for giving lab practicals that would consist of wonky specimens of similar/exact same colors. So ID from physical appearance was not a good option. You had to rely on all the other properties for identification.

INaturalist is a great platform for recording observations of flora and fauna in the field. It is widely used in academia for ecological research and is a great tool for identifying bits of nature. It can be accessed through smartphone apps or through web browsers.
For geology, Rockd is a great app for learning about new areas and capturing your observations.
I find these fun and informative to use when I visit new places.
