My bet is too many cooks:

It's a static list, sorted once at creation by the original author, with UK as Great Britain.

Then a different author came along and was told to replace GB with UK, probably did a find & replace all across the codebase, and didn't notice the list was sorted.

Always fun to search for Germany in those lists. I've seen Germany listed under D and Deutschland under G.

I suspect they have sorted by the name and displayed a localised version which uses the truncated full version: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Where does it claim to be alphabetical?

Oh god, svalbard wraps arround so it looks like "svalbard and jan" and "mayen"

They've even put Austria among European countries. Correct spelling:

Jan Mayen is part of Norway, and Svalbard is under Norway, but due to [long reason] not part of the Kingdom, and with Russian settlements

Maybe they just forgot where the letter M goes or maybe it's vibe coded slop.

perhaps it was sorted into G because it is AKA Great Britain
