It's absurd and embarrassing and utterly devastating to our prestige, but "western" countries mucking up the rest of the world is very fucking much precedented.

Heck, name a country that hasn't done that and wasn't founded because of it, and I'll... Well, show you a young country with a strong ally who did all their mucking for them.

    Oh, for sure. This was very much a frustrated response to comments I've seen on Lemmy today being like "I'm so sorry, the US isn't like this 😭"

    No, as soon as we were able to meaningfully project power, this is exactly what we've been like. Canada got a pass for a long time, being part of the British Empire, but otherwise if you were in the western hemisphere, you had to play by our rules
