Today, SUSE announced that it is creating a hard fork of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and that it will develop and maintain an RHEL-compatible distribution. SUSE says that it will invest $10 million into this project over the coming years. One major open source company forking another major open source company’s project is equivalent to going nuclear. But there’s a reason SUSE is doing this now, and that it will likely be championed by many in the open source community. It’s a complicated story.

Ieri SUSE ha annunciato che sta creando un hard fork di Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) e che svilupperà e manterrà una distribuzione compatibile con RHEL. SUSE afferma che investirà 10 milioni di dollari in questo progetto nei prossimi anni. Una grande azienda open source che biforca il progetto di un'altra grande azienda open source equivale a diventare nucleare. Ma c'è una ragione per cui SUSE lo sta facendo ora e che probabilmente sarà sostenuto da molti nella comunità open source. È una storia complicata.
