All conservatives need though is the thinnest sheen of plausible deniability. His MO is making that deniability as close to the line as possible (with both his racism and illegal activities). The GOP rubes just need an excuse; it doesn't much matter how transparent it is to outsiders. Maybe 'dog whistle' is the wrong name for it?
