I was in a nasty argument with my mom last night about her use of the racist slur “illegals”. I told her that people can’t be illegal. She replied that shes not a racist and that they’re illegal because they broke the law. I shot back, “oh, so, since you got that speeding ticket, that makes you an illegal?” “No! They committed a felony!” So I said, “oh, so Trump is a 34 times illegal then?” She said, “that’s different!” “Why? Because he’s white? See, that’s why you’re racist.” She screamed, “fuck you!” and hung up the phone. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 4 child comments replies: [–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 25 points 2 years ago (1 child) Sorry, yo. I texted back, “oh, yeah? What script did Marx write that said brown people were ‘illegal’, but white people weren’t? Was it in the letter to Lincoln praising him for freeing the slaves, or in Das Kapital? Because I must have missed it. Why don’t you send me a copy of where you read that.” She blocked me. permalink fedilink source parent hideshow 6 child comments replies: [–] maccentric@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 years ago I can’t talk politics reason with my folks either. permalink fedilink source parent [–] nulluser@programming.dev 8 points 2 years ago Ooof. I'm so sorry. I'm so sick of what the political discourse in this country has become, and what it's doing to people. permalink fedilink source parent [–] ReallyActuallyFrankenstein@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 2 years ago That's such a shame. She was upset that you wouldn't agree to a sane interpretation of her feelings - she's resolving all cognitive dissonance in her favor, and feels persecuted when others don't do the same. When instead she just needed to recognize that if verbalized logic made her feelings sound insane, that's because maybe her feelings are the problem, and those feelings need more, not less, scrutiny. Pretty sad that people are so far gone... permalink fedilink source parent [–] samus12345@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago That means you won.
